Job Description

What We Are Looking For

11-week summer internship program - Reports to the Director of Trading/Marketing

About the Internship

Join our Gas Marketing team for a 11-week summer internship on an active natural gas trading desk. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to wholesale natural gas markets, support daily trading and scheduling operations, and develop analytical tools that help the team evaluate market conditions and commercial opportunities.

Throughout the summer, you’ll work alongside experienced traders and schedulers to understand how natural gas is priced, transported, scheduled, and traded. You’ll contribute to daily desk operations, build tools that support commercial decision-making, and take ownership of analytical projects that address real business needs. The internship culminates in a final project presentation to executives, giving you the opportunity to showcase your work and recommendations to senior leadership.

What You Will Do

Orientation and Market Analysis

  • Learn natural gas market fundamentals, including transportation, storage, park and loan (PAL) services, and pricing mechanisms.
  • Gain an overview of the trading desk’s operations, current portfolio, and commercial objectives.
  • Shadow traders and schedulers to understand daily workflows, operating timelines, and how information flows across the desk.
  • Train on industry platforms and data sources, including ICE, PointLogic, Velocity Suite, and pipeline electronic bulletin boards (EBBs).
  • Research supply and demand fundamentals, identify market trends and pricing patterns, and contribute to daily morning market updates.

Gas Scheduling and Operations

  • Learn the nomination, confirmation, and scheduling process, including deadlines, transportation capacity constraints, and applicable rules.
  • Work alongside schedulers to understand gas flows, transportation contracts, and coordination with counterparties.
  • Support nomination entry, confirm scheduled quantities with counterparties, and assist with reconciling scheduled volumes against actual flows.
  • Develop an understanding of how scheduling decisions, pipeline constraints, and operational changes affect the desk’s daily positions and commercial opportunities.

Trading and Commercial Analysis

  • Analyze the fundamental drivers of natural gas prices, including supply and demand, weather, geopolitical developments, and regulatory changes.
  • Learn common trade structures and how traders evaluate commercial opportunities and trading strategies.
  • Use market data, reports, and analytical tools to assess market conditions and support daily trading decisions.
  • Develop an understanding of risk management, including hedging strategies, position management, and portfolio exposure.
  • Work alongside traders to connect market fundamentals, scheduling activity, and commercial decisions across the trading desk.

Projects You’ll Own

In addition to daily desk responsibilities, you’ll take ownership of analytical projects that support the team’s commercial and operational objectives. Projects may include:

  • Storage and transportation valuation: Support the valuation of storage and transportation services, including park and loan transactions.
  • Analytical tools and dashboards: Build or enhance Excel models and dashboards to track supply, demand, pricing, and market trends.
  • Regional flow and forecasting models: Expand forecasting tools using production data, demand trends, and growth assumptions to evaluate regional market dynamics.
  • Pipeline and infrastructure analysis: Develop reports to monitor pipeline maintenance, outages, and capacity constraints and assess their potential effects on regional markets.

Project assignments will reflect current business priorities and your developing skills. You’ll be expected to analyze data, identify insights, and develop practical recommendations that support the team’s work. At the end of the summer, you’ll present your findings and recommendations to executives.

What You’ll Take Away

By the end of the internship, you’ll have a practical understanding of how a natural gas trading desk operates, from market analysis and scheduling through commercial decision-making and risk management. You’ll understand how traders and schedulers work together, how gas moves from nomination through scheduling and final reconciliation, and how market fundamentals influence daily pricing and trading decisions.

You’ll also gain:

  • Real-world trading desk experience working alongside experienced traders and schedulers in a fast-paced commercial environment.
  • Industry knowledge of natural gas markets, transportation, storage, scheduling, trade structures, and portfolio risk management.
  • Technical and analytical skills through hands-on experience with industry platforms, market data, Excel modeling, forecasting, and analytical tools.
  • Commercial problem-solving experience by developing projects that address actual business needs and support trading and operational decisions.
  • Executive presentation experience by presenting your project findings and recommendations to senior leadership.

  • Self-motivated, energetic, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain analytical findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel overnight occasionally, as business needs require.

  • Interest in energy markets, commodities, finance, economics, engineering, or data analytics.
