The BOLT (Building Opportunities & Learning Together) Intern Program is Kinder Morgan’s elite summer internship program. POSITION DESCRIPTION

The EHS Project Permitting and Regulatory Compliance Systems teams are departments in the Operations Support Group (OSG) that support regulatory compliance for all Kinder Morgan businesses. The Project Permitting team coordinates, prepares, and submits environmental permit applications; coordinates agency consultations; and advises the Project Managers of any environmental permitting conditions or requirements. The Regulatory Compliance Systems Support (RCSS) team monitors and reviews the regulatory compliance landscape for changes in regulations that may affect Kinder Morgan operations, assess the potential impact of the changing regulations, and manages the electronic database systems used to track regulatory compliance across all businesses.

The intern will experience working in both the Project Permitting and Regulatory Compliance Systems teams. At the end of the BOLT internship, the intern will present a summary of their summer to the management of the department and senior business leaders. This will be an opportunity for the intern to demonstrate what they have learned throughout their internship and provide insight on their experience to senior business leaders and key stakeholders.

The internship opportunities will be focused in the following areas:

Project Permitting:

• Coordinate permitting activities, including regulatory reviews, environmental field surveys, agency communications, permit application submittals, agency negotiations, mitigation development and implementation.
• Coordinate required permitting activities with project managers, engineers, contractors and other Kinder Morgan team members.
• Provide regulatory and environmental technical guidance on permitting processes and ways to minimize or avoid permitting costs and delays to Kinder Morgan projects.
• Coordinate as necessary with Environmental, Health and Safety Dept.; attend Engineering Dept. Team meetings as well as Regional field meetings; attend project site visits and bid walks as needed; provide backup support for other permitting staff when absent from the office; perform other related duties as assigned.
• Gain experience in environmental laws and regulations, including National Environmental Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historical Preservation Act, Clean Water Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Regulatory Compliance Systems

• Monitor regulatory agencies and industry standards for proposed and final changes in environmental, health and safety, process safety, pipeline safety, and other requirements, interpretations and guidance. Regulatory monitoring includes federal, provincial, state, regional, and local jurisdictions where Kinder Morgan operates.
• Facilitate the determination of applicability and the operational and financial implications of proposed and final regulations and industry standards for business units.
• Assist in the development and enhancement of compliance policies and procedures.
• Support and further develop existing automated reporting systems such as, SSRS, PowerBI and Qlik analytics. Routine report creation and data comparison using Microsoft Excel and EHS compliance system data.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum GPA: 3.0
• Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, TEAMS, Project, and Outlook.
• Well-balanced interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communications skills are required.
• Basic understanding of Environmental regulations and permitting processes.
• Self-motivated and driven, with demonstrated interpersonal skills
• Ability to speak publicly in front of groups
• Ability to function effectively in both a team and individual environment
• Attention to detail and strong computer skills are essential
• Driven to discover and determined to deliver
• Open to travel in the United States
• Houston Headquarters Work Location

Working Conditions:

• This position has the opportunity to work a hybrid work schedule with Monday through Wednesday in the office and Thursday and Friday at home.
• Majority of the work will be conducted from an office environment. Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities

DESIRED MAJORS

Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or other related environmental science disciplines. Advanced degrees may also be considered when combined with the aforementioned fields of study.
