JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Systems Director Pharmacy and a registered Pharmacist, performs a variety of duties essential to the purchasing, preparation, distribution and charging of medications. Must be able to perform functions required in the unit dose area and IV room. Must be able to perform functions related to maintaining Omnicell Supply Cabinets and pharmacy related technology. Exhibits the F.I.R.S.T. values (Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service, and Trust).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepares oral, topical and intravenous dosage forms as ordered by the physician under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist. 

1. Delivers medications to and from the nursing stations and other departments as needed while maintaining appropriate security of medications per Federal and State legislative requirements. This position is authorized to gain entry into medication rooms/storage areas and have access to medications within the scope of their essential job description. 

1. Screens for appropriate storage and security of medications in the pharmacy and other departments through regular inventory surveys. 

1. Assists Pharmacist in maintaining adequate inventory of medications and related stock. 

1. Regularly acts as preceptor and educator to new pharmacy technicians, pharmacy technician students, PharmD candidates, pharmacist interns and pharmacist residents. 

1. Facilitates patient safety through implementation of bar code technology to repackage applicable medications within Federal and State legislative requirements. 

1. Super-users for Omnicell automated dispensing units, and CMS narcotic distribution software.  

1. Assists Pharmacist in maintaining Omnicell Storage Cabinet inventory through evaluation of localized patient needs to ensure adequate availability of medication and supplies. 

1. Maintains records of medication and narcotic distribution while adhering to Federal and State laws regarding distribution, dispensing and destruction of controlled substances. 

1. Responsible for checking cart-fill and restock for non-certified pharmacy technicians. (Law requires certified pharmacy technicians or pharmacist to check cart-fill and restock for non-certified technicians.) 

1. Investigates and reconciles discrepancy monitoring of controlled substances through use of Omnicell Supply Cabinet technology. 

1. Exemplifies quality patient and customer service by responding to needs communicated by telephone and other communication tools. 

1. Triages phone calls knowing when to refer to pharmacist or to handle independently. 

1. Reprioritizes and multi-tasks continuously based on clinical workload.

One (1) year hospital or pharmacy technician experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.  Basic algebra skills required to calculate dosages.
