Job Description

ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities, and overall project management. We are an El Paso born and raised company, and we are currently looking for an Asphalt Compact Roller Operator. The role is ideal for motivated professional who takes pride in quality and workmanship. 

An Asphalt Compactor/ Roller Operator, is responsible for operating heavy machinery like a road roller to compact freshly laid asphalt on construction sites, ensuring a smooth and even surface by driving the machine in overlapping passes to achieve the desired level of compaction and finish on roads, parking lots, and other paved areas.

Responsibilities

  • This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.
  • Safely operate roller in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling asphalt to desired compaction and smoothness.
  • Push hand roller and pound surfaces using a hand tamp or guide portable plate compactors over areas not accessible to a road roller.
  • Operate the roller in successive overlapping passes to apply the final finish and remove imperfections with a finish roller.
  • The operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor service and maintenance or refer to major problems to the supervisor.
  • Operate the Breakdown roller to achieve proper compaction.
  • Determine the speed and direction of the machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges do not form by excessive pressure.
  • Understanding all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving.

  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, and dusty environments.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with supervisors, co-workers, contractors and the public in a courteous, professional manner at all times. 
  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to the job, promote excellence in work ethic.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (OTJ experience can be substituted for education).
  • 1- 2 years’ experience operating Double Barrel Rollers, Compactor/ Finish Rollers, is required.
  • Work Zone Safety Procedures Training.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Performs strenuous physical activity, for long periods, under varying and adverse field conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs., stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull.
  • Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision. 
  • Work is performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to heavy traffic, noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. You must have reliable transportation to/from work and must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
