ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities, and overall project management. We are an El Paso born and raised company, and we are currently looking for an Asphalt Raker. The role is ideal for motivated professional who takes pride in quality and workmanship. 

An asphalt raker is a skilled construction professional responsible for spreading, leveling, and smoothing hot-mix asphalt on roads, driveways, and parking lots. They use lutes, shovels, and rakes to distribute material, finish joints, and ensure proper grade, slope, and drainage. The role involves, but is not limited to, heavy physical labor in, hot, fast-paced environments. 

Responsibilities

• Spreading and Leveling: Distribute hot asphalt evenly to the required depth and grade using asphalt rakes (lutes)
• Finishing Joints: Smooth and seal joints, edges, and gutter lines to create seamless surfaces.
• Surface Preparation: Clean, sweep, and prepare surfaces; dig out or repair potholes and utility cuts.
• Equipment Operation/Assistance: Assist with operating paving machines, rollers, and compacting equipment.
• Safety and Compliance: Set up traffic control (cones, signs), monitor material quality, and ensure adherence to safety standards. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials, work in high temperatures, and perform manual labor for long hours.
  Technical Knowledge: Understanding of asphalt grades, proper drainage techniques, and paving equipment.
  Precision: Strong attention to detail for ensuring a smooth, high-quality finish.
  Teamwork: Ability to work closely with paver operators, dump truck drivers, and crew foremen.
• Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, and dusty environments.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with supervisors, co-workers, contractors and the public in a courteous, professional manner at all times. 
• Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
• Commitment to the job, promote excellence in work ethic.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (OTJ experience can be substituted for education).
• 1- 2 years’ experience is required.
  
• Work Zone Safety Procedures Training.
  

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

• Performs strenuous physical activity, for long periods, under varying and adverse field conditions.
• Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs., stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull.
• Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision. 
  
• Work is performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to heavy traffic, noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

Additional Qualifying Factors
