As a Traffic Safety Project Engineer (Engineer I) within our Safety Evaluation Group, you will provide critical technical engineering expertise and investigative support for state and federal-aid safety projects and initiatives. The Safety Evaluation Group resides in the Traffic Safety Systems Section within the Traffic Safety Unit of the Transportation Mobility and Safety Division.

This position requires a strong foundation in traffic engineering principles and analytical highway safety skills. You will improve the Section’s efficiency and production while maintaining NCDOT’s high engineering standards. Key responsibilities include:

•Performing crash analyses
•Visualizing data and performing spatial analysis such as collision diagrams and GIS mapping
•Evaluating engineering projects and countermeasures
•Interpreting complex plans, specifications, and regulatory policies
•Communicating findings through technical reports and presentations

We are looking for a professional passionate about reducing traffic-related fatalities and injuries in North Carolina. You should be eager to stay at the forefront of safety research, utilizing advanced data collection methods and complex analysis techniques to complete comprehensive project reviews.

This position requires the basic knowledge, skill and ability of entry level traffic engineers, particularly those pertaining to engineering countermeasures and traffic crash analysis. This position requires an understanding of the technical aspects of traffic engineering principles, methods, techniques and analytical highway safety skills. The variety of projects and vast amounts of research in highway safety require professionals to stay abreast of the advancements in both methodologies and technologies used in analyzing safety projects. This requires the use of advanced data collection equipment, complex computer software applications and hardware. The position requires knowledge concerning research in the fields of traffic safety, traffic engineering, data collection techniques and equipment and data analyses with an emphasis on traffic engineering and safety. This position requires good written and oral communication skills to handle the task of report writing, correspondence, personnel and public contact.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC16 $57,983.00-$101,470.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

• Knowledge of traffic engineering, transportation engineering and civil engineering principles and practices
• Demonstrated ability to explain engineering concepts and related facts in a clear, concise and organized manner, both verbally and in writing, for a variety of audiences
• Experience with computer software and computer drawing packages
• Experience in conducting transportation analysis and transportation analysis techniques
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, develop work plans to accomplish goals and visions, and organize work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
