Job Description

Volunteers of America–Greater New York (VOA–Greater New York) is a leading anti-poverty organization serving neighbors in need across New York City, Northern New Jersey, and Westchester. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the following position:

Position: Maintenance Worker I

The Maintenance Worker I is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the building and grounds and minor repairs.

Location: Bronx, New York 10453

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred. Good communications skills.

Maintenance Worker I Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Clean all areas and dispose of garbage in accordance with the facility schedule.
  2. Provide general interior and exterior maintenance (examples: floor stripping, power washing, painting, lightbulb changing)
  3. Maintain the facility landscape and perimeter (examples: lawn mowing, shrub trimming, snow removal, debris removal)
  4. Assemble furniture and equipment and maintain in working condition
  5. Complete work orders in a timely manner.
  6. Accept and transport deliveries of supplies, furniture, and other program materials.
  7. Assist in inventory control.
  8. Be available and provide back-up in emergency situations.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee will be in both, the residential program and in the office. Work may be inside and outside.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to have visual acuity, talk and hear while communicating with peers and/or vendors. This position is sedentary and mobile. May require lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds without assistance. Must be able to climb and work from a ladder.
