The Institute for Public School Initiatives (IPSI) is a center within the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin. In support of the mission of the college which is focused on addressing responding to pressing challenges in education and health, IPSI commits resources and services to preparing students to achieve their academic potential; helps students and families increase their college awareness, readiness, and success; and provides educators and leadership with high-quality professional learning by designing and facilitating rigorous, engaging professional development content.

This position is fixed-term, and the expected end date is August 7, 2026.

This position is available to active UT and non-UT students in good academic standing with their university.

Purpose

The Institute for Public School Initiatives is looking for a passionate and detail-oriented Student Intern for the Summer 2026. The UT GEAR UP Student Data Entry and Collection Intern will play a key role in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to support student progress, program outcomes, and resource effectiveness. Designed for students interested in a career in data management and using data to identify problems and find solutions, the Student Intern will assist the GEAR UP Career Success Coach and Program Director.

Responsibilities

  • Function 1: Organize data into spreadsheets, primarily using Excel; assist in the data collection process with surveys, reports, student records, and other sources; gather data from students by asking questions via our text message platform and recording the response; Update and maintain student databases to ensure they are current and accessible; assist in accurate and current record keeping; help organize contact lists and outreach materials for the college/career success coach

  • Function 2: Assist in analyzing data trends to identify insights about student needs, program effectiveness, and outreach opportunities; support in creating visualizations (charts, graphs, dashboards) using tools such as Excel or Google Data Studio by highlighting key data points; Support in research to gather data on college enrollment trends, career resources, and student support programs; assist in compiling research reports for the GEAR UP Success Coach and Program Director

  • Function 3: Collaborate and support the team with virtual and in-person events as needed ex: college prep workshops, career panels, Q&A sessions with college advisors; assist in scheduling meetings between students and the college/career success coach for mentorship and support; some in-person events might be out of town/overnight

  • Function 4: Attend check-ins with the manager to discuss progress and receive feedback; participate in both in-person and virtual training sessions to enhance advocacy and communication skills; support with identifying in-kind match opportunities and other supporting documentation; assist with office tasks as needed, such as organizing materials, preparing reports, and updating contact lists

Required Qualifications

● Ability to work well in a team environment
● Demonstrate strong interest and passion for the GEAR UP Program
● Ability to manage outreach initiatives, track progress, and meet deadlines
● Excellent oral and written communication skills
● Ability to use Excel and Office software such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office
● Must be a current undergraduate enrolled in a post-secondary program and of good academic standing
● Access to a laptop or desktop computer for content creation, data entry, and remote work
● Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
