Medical/Dental Resident – Job Description

Position Title: Medical/Dental Resident
Department: Graduate Medical Education / Dental Education
Reports To: Program Director, Department Chair, and/or Attending Physician/Dentist

Position Summary
The Medical/Dental Resident is responsible for participating in an accredited residency training program under the supervision of attending physicians and/or dentists. The resident provides direct patient care, participates in educational and clinical activities, and develops the knowledge, clinical judgment, and professional skills necessary for independent practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients within the scope of the residency training program.
  • Obtain and document patient histories, physical examinations, assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes in the medical record.
  • Participate in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, surgical, and/or specialty clinical services as assigned.
  • Perform clinical procedures appropriate to the level of training and specialty under appropriate supervision.
  • Collaborate with attending physicians/dentists, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Respond to patient emergencies and participate in on-call coverage schedules as required.
  • Attend and actively participate in conferences, lectures, rounds, seminars, morbidity and mortality conferences, and other educational activities.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and residency program expectations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication with patients, families, and staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Complete required evaluations, training modules, certifications, and licensure requirements in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.

  • Eligible for or in possession of a valid state medical/dental license or limited permit, as applicable.
  • Acceptance into or appointment to an accredited residency training program.
  • Current BLS/ACLS certification, if required by the program or institution.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical principles and patient care practices appropriate to specialty training.
  • Ability to assess patient conditions and implement appropriate treatment plans.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation systems.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Working Conditions

  • Hospital, clinic, ambulatory care, and/or academic healthcare environment.
  • Requires flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities.
  • May involve prolonged standing, walking, and exposure to infectious diseases and other healthcare-related hazards.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist patients as necessary.
  • Ability to perform clinical procedures requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
