Position Summary

Garfield Counseling Center is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Custodian with experience in OSHA safety standards and healthcare or behavioral health facility cleaning practices. The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for clients, staff, visitors, and regulatory surveyors.

This role is especially important in supporting a professional treatment environment that complies with safety, infection control, and workplace standards applicable to outpatient healthcare and substance use treatment settings.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Facility Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean and sanitize offices, counseling rooms, nursing stations, restrooms, lobby areas, group rooms, and common spaces.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish floors and surfaces daily.
  • Empty trash and biohazard containers in accordance with OSHA and agency protocols.
  • Restock paper products, soap, sanitizer, and facility supplies.
  • Clean windows, doors, walls, and furniture as needed.
  • Maintain outdoor entrance cleanliness including sidewalks and entryways.

OSHA & Safety Compliance

  • Follow OSHA standards related to workplace safety, hazardous materials, bloodborne pathogens, and chemical handling.
  • Properly use and store cleaning chemicals and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report unsafe conditions, facility hazards, maintenance concerns, or incidents immediately.
  • Assist with infection control and sanitation protocols for healthcare-related environments.

Facility Support

  • Support preparation and cleanup for meetings, inspections, trainings, and community events.
  • Assist with light maintenance tasks and vendor coordination when needed.
  • Help maintain a professional environment consistent with CARF and healthcare regulatory expectations.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and facility safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare, behavioral health, nonprofit, or medical settings strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and safe chemical handling procedures required.
  • Ability to operate standard custodial equipment safely.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Strong reliability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact respectfully with clients and staff.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with infection control procedures.
  • Familiarity with CARF, healthcare, or clinical facility standards.
  • Basic maintenance or repair knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks efficiently.

This position works in an outpatient behavioral health and opioid treatment program environment serving adults and families. Professionalism, compassion, discretion, and safety awareness are essential.
