Job Description

Position Summary:

The Medical Records Assistant Intern is an entry-level opportunity designed for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in healthcare administration, health information management, and medical records operations within a nonprofit community healthcare organization. This role provides practical training and work experience while supporting the organization, maintenance, and confidentiality of patient health records in a healthcare setting.

The intern will work closely with medical records staff and healthcare teams to learn documentation procedures, electronic health record systems, and healthcare administrative operations. No prior healthcare experience is required; training will be provided.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with organizing, scanning, filing, and maintaining patient medical records 
  • Help retrieve and prepare records for providers, departments, and authorized requests 
  • Support electronic document management and data entry tasks 
  • Verify patient information for accuracy and completeness 
  • Assist with processing incoming and outgoing medical records documentation 
  • Help maintain accurate and organized electronic and paper filing systems 
  • Respond professionally to internal requests related to medical records support 
  • Assist with tracking and documenting records requests and releases 
  • Support administrative tasks related to health information management operations 
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines 
  • Participate in training sessions, team meetings, and professional development opportunities 
  • Perform other administrative and records support duties as assigned

Qualifications

No prior healthcare or office experience is required. Training and mentorship will be provided throughout the internship.

  • High school diploma, GED, or currently enrolled in a high school, college, or vocational program 
  • Interest in healthcare administration, health information management, public health, or nonprofit healthcare operations 
  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn 
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Dependable attendance and ability to work in a team environment

Physical Demands:

  • May sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to see and hear within normal range with or without correction device(s)
  • Dexterity and hand to eye coordination as normally associated with operating office equipment, computers and telephones
