UPMC is seeking a dedicated Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to join our dynamic Histology Lab team. This full-time position is perfect for someone passionate about contributing to life-changing medicine in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Position Details:

  • Shift: 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Location: Clinical Lab Building in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, near UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

  • Applicants will be placed in the appropriate role (Histotechnician or Histotechnologist) and salary level based on experience and education.
  • The Histotechnician role starts at $24.36 per hour.

We’re excited to offer sign-on bonuses for qualified Histo Techs who join our team:

·       $15,000 for those with 0–1 year of experience with a 2-year full-time commitment

·       $20,000 for those with 1+ years of experience with a 2-year full-time commitment

Plus, earn an additional $10,000 upon completion of your third year of employment.

Sign-on bonuses are also available for part-time positions and will be prorated based on commitment.

Responsibilities: 

  • Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
  • Supports academic mission of department.
  • Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
  • Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
  • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.


Histotechnologist:

  • Successful completion of bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
  • One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.

Histotechnician:

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR an Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
  • One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post-training with certification OR 3 years of experience working as Histology Lab Technician or equivalent title without certification
     

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP) certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • American Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 18 months of hire.
