Job Description

MAJOR FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for assisting with surgical procedures in the Delivery Room for which she/he has been prepared within the scope of law.  This position will function as an integral part of the nursing team in working with RN in caring for patients; and is self-directive providing sub-acute care or performing routine activities.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must meet one of the requirements below as detailed in NJ Surgical Technology Certification Law effective December 21, 2011:
  • Has successfully completed a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for surgical technologists OR
  • Holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization OR
  • Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps OR
  • Provides evidence that the person was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility on the effective date December 21, 2011, OR
  • Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent that individual is performing surgical technology duties related to that service.
  • A minimum of 1 year of Scrub Technician experience preferred.            

Certification/Licensure:  

  • Required to complete 15 hours of continuing education annually to remain qualified to practice as a surgical technologist the state of NJ. 
  • CST certification.
  • BLS required.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to exercise initiative within scope of practice.
