Job Description

Position Summary

The Telecom Utility Locator (HDD) is responsible for tracking and guiding underground directional drilling operations to ensure accurate bore path alignment and safe installation of telecommunications conduit and fiber infrastructure. This role works closely with the Directional Drill Operator and crew members to maintain proper drill head location, avoid underground utilities, and ensure compliance with project specifications.

The ideal candidate has experience with utility locating equipment, HDD tracking systems, and underground utility safety practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Track and guide the drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations using locating equipment.
  • Monitor drill head position, depth, and alignment to ensure accurate bore path installation.
  • Communicate continuously with the Directional Drill Operator to maintain proper drill trajectory.
  • Identify and verify existing underground utilities prior to drilling operations.
  • Interpret bore plans, construction drawings, and utility locate markings.
  • Utilize locating equipment such as Ditch Witch, DigiTrak, Subsite, or similar tracking systems.
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding utilities and ensure safe drilling practices.
  • Assist with potholing and verification of underground utilities when required.
  • Support conduit installation and pullback operations.
  • Follow OSHA safety standards and company safety protocols.
  • Assist with site preparation, traffic control, and restoration activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1–2 years experience in utility locating or directional drilling support
  • Knowledge of underground utility locating practices
  • Experience operating HDD tracking systems
  • Ability to read and interpret utility locate markings and construction drawings
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with drilling crews
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physical construction work
  • Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting telecommunications fiber construction projects
  • Experience with DigiTrak, Subsite, or Ditch Witch locating systems
  • Knowledge of fiber optic conduit installation
  • CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) preferred
  • Experience working in OSP construction environments

Work Environment

  • Outdoor construction environments
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Work near heavy equipment and active construction sites
  • Physical labor including lifting, bending, kneeling, and walking job sites

Travel

Travel may be required depending on project location.

Compensation

Competitive wage depending on experience (DOE).
