The ideal candidate will deliver engaging, standards-aligned science instruction while fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports the academic and social development of all learners. Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver engaging 4th grade science lessons aligned with state academic standards and the school’s curriculum. Create hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that encourage exploration, experimentation, and problem solving. Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments to monitor student progress. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students. Use data from formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and improve student outcomes. Establish and maintain a structured, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment. Integrate technology and innovative instructional strategies to enhance learning. Collaborate with grade-level teachers, instructional coaches, and administration to support student achievement. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and academic expectations. Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school-wide initiatives. Supervise students during assigned duties such as lunch, recess, or school events. Maintain accurate student records, grades, and reports as required by the school. QualificationsQualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Elementary Education, Science Education, or a related field. Valid state teaching certification or licensure for elementary education (or ability to obtain). Strong knowledge of elementary science concepts and instructional strategies. Excellent classroom management and communication skills. Ability to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Preferred: Master’s degree in Education or related field. Prior experience teaching elementary science or upper elementary grades. Experience in a charter school or diverse educational setting. Familiarity with STEM-based or inquiry-driven instruction. Skills & Competencies Strong instructional planning and organizational skills Ability to motivate and engage young learners Collaboration and teamwork Cultural responsiveness and commitment to equity in education Effective use of educational technology Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, and move around the classroom for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry classroom materials up to 20 pounds. Ability to supervise students in classroom and outdoor settings. Work Environment This position operates in a classroom environment within a K-12 charter school setting and may include occasional school events outside normal hours. In 2004, a group of parents and concerned citizens decided to open a public charter school for at-risk students who were not being successful in the regular classrooms in the Memphis Public Schools. An application for Southern Avenue Charter Elementary School of Academic Excellence and Creative Arts was written and approved by the Tennessee Department of Education and Memphis City Schools. In August 2005 the school opened. The mission of the school was to teach the “whole child” and prepare that child to be a successful citizen… Today, Southern Avenue Elementary has grown from 69 to over 360 students, boasting a Level 5 on the TCAP (the top score on the state’s exam rating scale).
