Class Definition

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Within the Department of Transportation (DOT), to assist in performing routine and entry level civil engineering and related tasks in the area of specialization indicated by the title of the class of position; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a superior from whom specific work assignments and instructions are received; work is reviewed upon completion for results attained, professional and technical adequacy to desired objectives and goals and accepted engineering methods and techniques.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Within the Department of Transportation (DOT), to assist in performing routine and entry level civil engineering and related tasks in the area of specialization indicated by the title in the class of position.

Within Bridge Engineering: To assist in performing routine and entry level bridge engineering duties related to overseeing the safety of all types of  bridges; to assist in performing bridge loading rating analyses in-house and assist in the review of consultant load ratings; to assist in developing scopes of work and contract documents for bridge maintenance and preservation including distribution of quantities, specifications and estimates; to assist in planning and performing bridge inspections, assist in preparing bridge inspection reports, and review of consultant inspections; to assist in the oversight, escort and review of vehicle permits for capacity, clearance and safety on highways and bridges; to do related work as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A working knowledge of engineering principles and practices of the area of specialization indicated in the title of the class of position and the ability to apply such principles and practices; a working knowledge of engineering fundamentals and techniques that are commonly used to resolve problems which regularly occur administratively and in the field involving the area of specialization; considerable skill in the use of  current  computer aided engineering technology; a working knowledge of all relevant AASHTO bridge, traffic, and highway design codes; the ability to apply engineering principles and practices to troubleshoot a variety of field problems and assist in recommending solutions; the ability to read and interpret all types of plans and specifications; the ability to review the work of other civil engineers; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, public officials and the general public; and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Education: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.

Supplemental Information

As a member of a bridge and related structure team, to independently perform technical safety inspections in accordance with national bridge inspection standards; to inspect bridges for corrosion and deterioration, make technical measurements, and inspect concrete beams and girders; to inspect abutments, piers, decks, trusses, bearings for deterioration; to prepare technical inspection notes, photos and sketches; to operate special inspection equipment, review engineering plans and prior inspection reports, and coordinate traffic control and equipment on-site; and to related work as required.

Within six months after appointment an applicant must possess a certificate of completion that fulfills the comprehensive bridge inspection training requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
