Job Description

The Food & Nutrition Services Intern will support hospital food service operations, patient experience initiatives, regulatory compliance efforts, and interdisciplinary collaboration between Food & Nutrition Services and Nursing departments. This role is ideal for a student interested in healthcare administration, nutrition services, hospitality, quality improvement, or healthcare operations.

The intern will gain hands-on experience in patient satisfaction initiatives, healthcare food service management, compliance monitoring, process improvement, staff education, and operational analytics within a hospital environment.

Job Responsibilities

Interdepartmental Collaboration

• Serve as a liaison between Food & Nutrition Services and Nursing departments to improve communication and coordination of patient care services
• Assist with resolving operational concerns related to patient meal services and nutrition support
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and patient care discussions as appropriate

Patient Experience & Service Recovery

• Conduct patient rounding to evaluate meal satisfaction and overall dining experience
• Assist with service recovery initiatives by addressing patient concerns and escalating issues appropriately
• Support initiatives aimed at improving patient satisfaction scores and patient-centered care

Data Analytics & KPI Reporting

• Assist with collecting, tracking, and analyzing departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
• Support development of client-facing reports and dashboards related to patient satisfaction, meal delivery accuracy, tray timelines, sanitation compliance, and operational performance
• Analyze trends and identify opportunities for operational improvement

Process Improvement & Auditing

• Participate in process development initiatives to improve efficiency, patient experience, and departmental workflows
• Conduct operational audits related to food safety, sanitation, meal accuracy, and service standards
• Assist leadership with continuous quality improvement projects

Communication & Department Initiatives

• Assist with creation and distribution of department newsletters and communication materials
• Support communication of departmental goals, achievements, patient satisfaction initiatives, and employee recognition programs
• Help maintain communication boards, training materials, and departmental resources

Employee Training & Onboarding

• Assist with onboarding processes for new employees
• Help coordinate training documentation and compliance tracking
• Support employee education related to:
• Infection prevention and control
• Patient safety initiatives
• Food safety and sanitation standards
• Customer service excellence
• Regulatory compliance requirements

Regulatory Compliance & Safety

• Assist with regulatory readiness initiatives and department compliance monitoring
• Support audits and documentation preparation for healthcare regulatory agencies
• Participate in infection control and patient safety initiatives
• Help ensure compliance with:
• Joint Commission standards
• CMS regulations
• HACCP and food safety guidelines
• Hospital policies and procedures
  
  

Qualifications

• Candidates actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in any field of study. A major in nutrition, dietetics, hospitality or business is preferred. Please keep in mind that educational requirements may change depending on the responsibilities of the role.  
• Candidates willing to work flexible hours, which may include nights, weekends or holidays
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
