Job Description

ABOUT SLATE

At Slate, we’re building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love—and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.

| WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

As a Co-op Intern at our fast-paced automotive startup, you will sit at the intersection of customer perception and engineering reality. You will help us answer two critical questions: “What do our customers truly experience?” and “Does what we build match the design?” You will collect, analyze, and report on customer feedback (dealers, fleet users, early adopters) while also supporting metrology tasks, using precision tools to measure parts, assemblies, and tolerances. This role directly influences both product improvements and quality documentation.

| WHAT YOU GET TO DO:

Voice of Customer (40%)

  • Capture and organize feedback from test drives, audits, warranty data, and service reports

  • Synthesize qualitative data into actionable insights for engineering and design teams.

  • Create VoC dashboards, highlight recurring issues (e.g., fit/finish complaints, ride comfort, etc.), and track customer satisfaction trends.

  • Assist in developing customer journey maps and manufacturing top issues and “top complaints” lists for weekly standups.

  •  Participate in vehicle ride-alongs or remote diagnostics sessions to document real-world usage

Metrology (60%)

  • Learn and operate precision measurement tools: calipers, micrometers, portable CMMs (coordinate measuring machine), and 3D scanners (e.g., FARO, HEXAGON, GOM, etc.).

  • Support dimensional inspection of incoming parts, subassemblies, and full-vehicle checkpoints (e.g., panel gaps, fastener torque, weld locations).

  •  Document measurement data in quality reports, comparing to CAD nominal values and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) callouts.

  • Flag out-of-tolerance conditions and help investigate root causes (e.g., fixture wear, supplier variation).

  • Maintain metrology equipment logs and assist with gauge R&R studies.

| WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM:

Education

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in: Mechanical/Industrial or Automotive Engineering, Quality Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field (e.g., Data Science with a technical focus or Product Design).

Skills

  • Basic understanding of measurement principles (precision, accuracy, tolerance).

  • Familiarity with at least one: calipers, height gages, or micrometers.

  • Strong analytical mindset — comfortable with Excel/Google Sheets (pivot tables, charts).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to translate customer complaints into technical descriptions.

  • Organized, self-starter — comfortable in a startup environment with changing priorities.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with 3D scanning or basic CAD (SolidWorks, Catia, Fusion 360).

  • Knowledge of GD&T or metrology software (PolyWorks, PC-DMIS, or similar).

  • Passion for automotive quality, EVs

Work Environment Requirements

  • Startup setting: fast decisions, direct access to founders/engineers.

  • Shop floor / lab environment

| WHAT YOU’LL GAIN:

  • Hands-on experience with production-grade metrology tools and quality systems.

  • Direct line of sight from customer feedback to engineering change requests.

  • Mentorship from startup leaders — you’ll own real projects, not busywork.

  • Exposure to automotive launch processes (PPAP, FAI, CPK).

  • Opportunity to present findings to cross-functional teams (Design, Manufacturing, Engineering).

Slate Auto

At Slate, we’ve got one job: building a vehicle you’ll fall in love with. We believe that car buyers—not car companies—should call the shots. We like looking at a road, not a screen. We don’t like paying for stuff we don’t need.
We like picking out the stuff we do need. We think dings are badges, not blemishes. But we know not everyone likes what we like. So, we built you a Slate: you make it yours.
