Job Description

Job Summary

The Library’s circulation desk serves as a key public face for the Albany County Public Library making sure that members of the community are able to find, access, and use the materials available from the library. Under the direction of the Technical Services Librarian, the Technical Services Specialist will help with all desk activities at the highest level of customer service. This includes checking materials in and out, performing basic technology troubleshooting and assistance, and assisting patrons use the library and its services. The Technical Services Specialist also supports the work of the Technical Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Desk Operations & Customer Service

  • Works scheduled hours at the library’s main service desk, substitutes for other staff as needed.
  • Be committed to public service values: work well with and is patient and helpful with all customers, volunteers, and other staff members.
  • Inform meeting room users of policies, collect fees, and assist with equipment.
  • Maintains patron privacy and other library values and advocates for intellectual freedom and freedom of access issues.
  • Assist library patrons with their questions, concerns, and requests.
  • Process and handle money collected such as fees, donations, and credit cards. 
  • Process library materials, including checking items in and out, assessing material conditions, locating material and accurately organizing them. 

Technical Services 

  • Process library checkout materials (apply protective covers, RFID tags, barcodes, etc.).
  • Mend library materials, as needed.
  • Support cataloguing processes when needed, including:
    • Initial check-in of materials and making sure items with patron holds receive priority cataloging and processing. 
    • Check in, process, and distribute new periodicals.
  • Provide support to the Technical Services Librarian on special projects.
  • Evaluate and analyze data to identify errors. 
  • Maintain skills in areas of work, including staying current in WYLD competency checklists for: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Circulation, General Skills, Serials, and WYLDCAT.

Organization-wide expectations

  • Deal effectively with a variety of people in the face of interruptions and stress.
  • Explain and enforce, with clarity and empathy, library policies and procedures to the public.

  • Use and help patrons and staff by using computers, digitals devices, apps, social media, printers, fax machines, and library specific software. 
  • Keep skills current and growing: participate in library meetings and committees, attend trainings, seek learning opportunities, follow current trends related to job area. 
  • Be committed to public service values: work well with and demonstrate patience with all customers, volunteers, and other staff members. 
  • Offer suggestions for better customer service and/or library functions. 
  • Show initiative and good judgment in dealing with unexpected situations.
  • Expect to be photographed for publication in newsletters, Facebook, and the library’s web page.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Be knowledgeable about the current programs, services and collections of the library.
  • Informs the public about and enforces library policies and procedures, including information about the customer’s own records or requests.
  • Must be able to learn and meet the minimal computer competencies for staff email, phone, time sheet and calendar programs and can operate and troubleshoot technology/software.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Some high school education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the public. 
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate well both in writing and verbally. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Some customer service, hospitality.
  • Experience handling private information. 
  • Experience working in a library setting. 

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a library environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and regularly interacts with members of the public in person, over the phone, and by email. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine and complex documents, read small print and computer screens. Moves book trucks with 20 pounds of weight. Shelves books at heights between six feet and floor level.

Other Requirements

  • Required background check for final candidate. 

Scheduling

Employee is expected to work 32 hours per week. Employee will be required to work evenings and weekends, and will periodically need to adjust schedule to accommodate special programs and events. 

Salary & Benefits

Wage:

$15.50-$17.30

Hours:

32 hours per week

This is a benefited position. Benefits package includes: employee health, dental, vision, and life insurance paid by the employer, dependent insurance supplement paid by employer, and a required statewide retirement plan.

The specific schedule will be determined when a job offer is made. Employee will be required to work some evenings and weekends, and will periodically need to adjust schedule to accommodate special programs and/or outreach events.
