Job Description
The Head Lifeguard is responsible for assisting the Aquatics Director in developing, organizing and implementing high quality Lifeguards and fully staffed pools. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The incumbent serves others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community.your individuality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School diploma or equivalent; required.
• Minimum age of 18; required.
• Strong supervisory and organizational skills a must.
• Lifeguard (including Deep Water) Certification, which includes CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid; required.
• Certification for Oxygen Administration within 30 days of employment; required.
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Maintain constant surveillance of the pool areas.
2. Know/review all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
3. Extensive knowledge of and ability to administer or use first aid, CPR, AED, and other lifesaving techniques.
4. Maintain effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
5. Assist Pool Manager with monitoring and establishing work schedules of all lifeguards to ensure appropriate coverage for all shifts, dates and times.
6. Expected to lifeguard if any shift is not covered.
7. Assist in proofing the lifeguard schedule for payroll purposes.
8. Provide recruitment, scheduling, coordination and onboarding for all lifeguard staff in conjunction with the Pool Manager.
9. Provide quality member service by knowing members by name, displaying a pleasant and professional attitude at all times, assisting members, and referring questions or concerns outside your area of expertise to a supervisor.
10. Work with supervisor in the development of Lifeguard customer service skills and job performance.
11. Understand, teach and enforce aquatic and YMCA safety rules, procedures and policies.
12. Collects applicable pool admission fees from members.
13. Works in the concession stand when scheduled.
14. Maintains locker room cleanliness.
15. Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
16. Maintain accurate records of pool logs and report needed pool maintenance.
17. Respect, mentor and cooperate with all co-workers.
18. Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times according to the YMCA Code of Conduct.
19. Accept constructive criticism and take corrective actions as needed.
20. Maintain pool areas in regards to equipment, safety, inventory and cleanliness.
21. Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
22. Perform other duties as assigned.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work schedule will include daytime, evening and weekend hours and ability to travel to all program activity sites.

2. Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
3. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
4. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
5. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
6. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
7. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
8. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
9. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
