Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Counselor or Counselor Supervisee to join our residential treatment team. This role is centered on the core of residential programming—group facilitation and recovery-focused engagement. The ideal candidate is passionate about substance use disorder treatment, thrives in a group-based therapeutic environment, and values consistent presence with clients in early recovery.

In this role, you will primarily facilitate clinical and psychoeducational groups, conduct recovery-oriented one-on-one sessions, and complete intake assessments. You will support adults ages 18+ as they build insight, skills, accountability, and connection during residential treatment, while collaborating closely with the broader clinical and case management teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitation of core residential clinical groups, including psychoeducation, process groups, and recovery-focused therapeutic groups.
  • Conducting recovery-oriented individual sessions focused on engagement, stabilization, insight development, and treatment participation.
  • Completion of intake assessments following pre-assessment.
  • Contributing clinical observations and client updates during treatment team meetings.
  • Supporting individualized service and treatment planning through group participation and 1:1 engagement.
  • Collaborating closely with Case Management and interdisciplinary team members to support the client’s treatment experience.
  • Maintaining appropriate professional communication with individuals involved in client care, as directed.
  • Completing all clinical documentation in accordance with accreditation standards, state licensing requirements, and billing guidelines in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Supporting continuity of care through appropriate clinical handoffs and coordination (discharge planning led by Case Management).
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Counselor Supervisees welcome and encouraged to apply.
  • License preferred: CSAC or CSAC-S

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in human services, substance use disorder treatment, or a related setting.
  • Experience facilitating group-based programming strongly preferred.
  • Experience using electronic medical record (EMR) systems for clinical documentation.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Strong group facilitation and engagement skills.
  • Familiarity with 12-step recovery programs and recovery-oriented frameworks.
  • Solid clinical documentation practices.
  • De-escalation and basic crisis intervention skills.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a structured residential treatment environment.

Working Conditions

  • Direct care clinical position within a residential treatment setting providing services across ASAM levels 3.5, 3.1, and 2.5.
  • Role is primarily group-based, with scheduled recovery-oriented individual sessions and intake assessments.
  • Full-time scheduling aligned with residential programming needs.
    • Sunday-Thursday 10:00am-6:30pm
    • Tuesday-Saturday 10:00am-6:30pm

Why This Role Matters

  • Impact: This role anchors the daily therapeutic experience of residential treatment. Group programming is the foundation of engagement, accountability, skill-building, and peer connection in early recovery—and this position is central to that work.
  • Growth & Development: Provides hands-on experience strengthening group facilitation, substance use disorder treatment skills, recovery-oriented counseling, and interdisciplinary collaboration within a structured residential setting.
  • Team & Culture: You’ll work as part of a multidisciplinary, recovery-focused team that values consistency, supervision, ethical practice, and a supportive clinical culture.

Mainspring Recovery

The name “Mainspring” was chosen with intention and meaning. In a mechanical watch, the mainspring is the central source of power. It is the tightly wound spring that stores energy and releases it gradually, keeping every gear, hand, and movement working in harmony. Without it, the watch cannot function and time itself appears to stand still. In much the same way, Mainspring Recovery was founded on the belief that healing begins when a person reconnects with their own inner source of movement, resilience, and life. That moment of reconnection is where healing truly starts. With this philosophy at its core, founder Yitzy Halon envisioned creating a place that reflected both restoration and possibility. His goal was to design an environment where individuals seeking recovery could experience dignity, structure, and peace while rebuilding their lives. Recovery requires more than treatment alone; it requires an atmosphere that encourages hope, stability, and human connection. After an extensive search for the right location, Yitzy discovered a former Sleep Inn hotel in Dumfries, Virginia. The property offered the opportunity to transform an existing structure into something entirely new—a residential treatment center designed to support individuals on their recovery journey. In March of 2022, construction began to convert the hotel into what would become Mainspring’s flagship 74-bed residential treatment facility. By December 2022, the transformation was complete. Just a few months later, in March 2023, Mainspring received its license from the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, officially opening its doors to individuals seeking treatment and support. The vision did not stop there. In 2025, Yitzy expanded Mainspring’s mission by revitalizing the historic Court Street property in Lynchburg, Virginia. Once a vital community resource that had closed its doors, the building was restored and reopened to serve the residents of Lynchburg.
