Job Description

The Video Editing Intern is a hands-on creator within our post-production team, responsible for editing, shaping and finishing compelling video content. Collaborating closely with producers and senior editors, you will be directly involved in the creative process-from assembling raw footage to applying color correction and graphics-to bring our brand’s stories to life in a polished final product.

The Video Editing Intern edits all video content for OkayAfrica & Okayplayer, managing projects from raw footage to final delivery. This includes mastering the editor's workflow—assembly, color correction, audio mixing, and graphics implementation. A sharp creative eye and adaptability are vital for meeting our team's evolving technical needs:

  • Edit a variety of short-form (social clips, reels, promos) and long-form (interviews, mini-docs) video projects from start to finish.
  • Ingest raw footage from shoots, organize media, and archive completed projects according to our post-production workflow.
  • Sync audio and video from multi-camera and multi-source recordings to prepare projects for editing.
  • Perform color correction and apply brand-consistent color grading to ensure a high-quality, professional look across all footage.
  • Resize and reformat videos for various distribution channels, including social media (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) and web platforms.
  • Add and animate assets, including applying GFX (titles, lower thirds) and other design elements to enhance storytelling and brand identity.

We are seeking a candidate who is deeply immersed in the culture we represent and is eager to build a foundation in media production. This role is a key support function for our creative team. To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A deep and authentic passion for Black culture, with a strong knowledge of its musical evolution, including Hip-Hop and R&B (from the 90s to present), Afrobeats, and Amapiano.
  • The ability to work on-site at our Brooklyn office 3 days per week and be based in the NYC metropolitan area.
  • A strong, practical understanding of various social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X, etc.) and how video is consumed on each.
  • Previous internship experience or a portfolio of personal/academic projects that demonstrates an interest and aptitude for video editing and digital media management.
  • Hands-on experience with video editing software; proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro is highly desired. Familiarity with mobile editing tools (e.g., CapCut) is also a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with a keen eye for detail that is essential for logging, archiving, and tracking assets.
  • A collaborative spirit with strong communication skills, ready to support the post-production team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
