Job Description

  • Schedule: Full Time / Days
  • Salary Range: $29.20 – $43.80 per hour

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for laboratory specimen processing, test performance and test result reporting in the clinical departments of the laboratory. The position is responsible for performing procedures relative to quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance according to laboratory protocols.  Strives to achieve highest level of customer satisfaction through activities and interaction with customers.

What you will be doing:

  • Commitment to Team:
    • Develops and facilitates good working relationships with superiors, physicians, staff members and co-workers/peers.
    • Contributes in problem-solving activities intra-and inter-departmentally.
    • Demonstrates flexible staffing needs within the department.
    • Uses department resources (supplies, equipment) in a cost-effective manner.
    • Communicates effectively and in a timely manner to medical director, co-workers and physicians through informal updates, written and verbal communications.
    • Consistently meets attendance standards and follows the department standards for "calling in" and requesting time off.
    • Must accept responsibility to model all facets of cooperative team member dynamics.
  • Performs Clinical Laboratory Testing in an Efficient Manner:
    • Begins duties immediately upon reporting to work.
    • Procedures performed in accordance with approved procedure manual.
    • Ability to organize work during heavy workload periods.
    • Prioritizes/reorganizes workload in response to STAT requests.
    • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for areas worked, communicates shortages to supervisor or lead.
    • Learns new procedures/assignments in reasonable time frame.
    • Maintains clean and orderly work environment.
  • Produces Accurate Results with Minimal Clerical/Data Entry Errors Including Omissions:
    • Correlates data and monitors test results for reasonability.
    • Reports all critical test values to appropriate individuals.
    • Procedures completed in an efficient manner according to established time frames (STATS, timed tests).
    • Accountable and responsibility for the job performed.
  • Assures Quality of Results Reported through Quality Control Procedures:
    • Adheres to laboratory quality control policies, documents all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
    • Follows protocols for running controls and accepting and verifying results.
    • Notifies supervisor/leads of out-of-control, discrepant or unexpected results within expected time frames.
    • Follows the Laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the Laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Supports corporate compliance initiatives
  • Demonstrates understanding of safety policies and protocols.
  • Promotes Patient Safety goals.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings on a regular basis.
  • Operates laboratory computer relative to job functions.
  • Projects competent, caring attitude to clients.
  • Adheres to the department appearance and dress code policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality relating to patients, specimens, and records.
  • Implements improvements as able or seeks help from coworkers and supervisor.
  • Assists coworkers, as needed, to meet workload priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Successful completion of a two-year post-high school program in Medical Laboratory Technology, resulting in an Associate degree.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program.
  • Meets federal guidelines under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) for performing high-complexity testing.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification is preferred, or proof of eligibility to sit for the certification examination within six (6) months of hire.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with individuals from multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to ensure accuracy and quality of work.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail.
