Position Summary

The Summer Swim Instructor/Lifeguard is responsible for providing safe, engaging, and adaptive swim instruction to children and adults with disabilities while ensuring the highest level of water safety. This role combines lifeguarding duties with instructional support, promoting confidence, independence, and skill development in a supportive, inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities

Swim Instruction

  • Provide individual and small-group swim lessons tailored to varying ability levels
  • Adapt teaching techniques to meet the needs of participants with physical, developmental, or cognitive disabilities
  • Promote water safety, confidence, and skill progression
  • Track participant progress and communicate with families and staff as needed

Lifeguarding & Safety

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area to ensure participant safety
  • Enforce all pool rules and safety procedures
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, including water rescues and first aid situations
  • Conduct routine safety checks of the pool and surrounding areas

Program Support

  • Assist with setup and breakdown of swim program activities
  • Support participants with entering/exiting the pool as needed
  • Collaborate with therapists and program staff to support participant goals
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe aquatic environment

Professional Conduct

  • Provide a positive, respectful, and encouraging environment for all participants
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, and strong communication skills
  • Serve as a team player and represent Bay Area Rehabilitation Center professionally

Requirements

Required:

  • Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent)
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
  • Strong swimming skills and knowledge of water safety practices

Preferred:

  • Experience working with children or adults with disabilities
  • Prior swim instruction or coaching experience
  • Background in recreation, education, or therapy-related fields

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to swim, lift, and assist participants in and out of the pool
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations

Work Environment

  • Indoor pool setting
  • Exposure to heat, humidity, and water conditions
  • Active, hands-on role requiring consistent movement

Bay Area Rehabilitation Center

The mission of Bay Area Rehabilitation Center is to provide outpatient therapeutic, vocational, social skill training and recreational services for persons with disabilities or injuries and support services for their families, The Center also seeks to advocate for and work to provide accessible and affordable housing for this population. Our Outpatient Therapy Program provides a variety of services for all ages including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy. aquatic therapy, sports injuries, worker rehabilitation, and women's health physical therapy. Our Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECI) provides a variety of services for children between the ages of 0-36 months in the natural environment of the child. The Opportunity Center Program at Bay Area Rehabilitation Center provides a variety of services for adults with disabilities. These services include day habilitation, home community services, job placement, Texas Home Living, and vocational training. The benefit from each of the various programs is that participants are provided with social, life, and vocational skills. These programs combine to help participants to obtain a sense of empowerment as well as to help them succeed socially in the community. Aquatic Exercise is also provided at Bay Area Rehabilitation Center. Both low and high intensity exercise classes are provided in our 25-meter indoor heated pool with a depth of 3-5 feet. The pool features an attached hot tub, a wheelchair ramp, and a lift chair. A Parkinson's class is also provided with the cast for participation being covered by the Houston Area Parkinson's Society (HAPS) for qualifying individuals.
