Position Summary

The District Six Accounting Co-op will support the District Six Administrator with a variety of fiscal and budgeting projects and tasks.  District Six is part of MassDOT’s Highway Division and supports a wide range of projects and employees.  The co-op will leverage their accounting knowledge to troubleshoot issues, maintain compliance with state and federal requirements, and participate in the day-to-day accounting work of the district.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare documents for processing payments through the MMARS and Project Info system.
  • Use accounting principles and procedures while working with vendors to ensure account information is accurate and up to date.
  • Work with District 6 employees to manage their fiscal needs.
  • Encumber funds as needed to ensure proper payment of bills.
  • Review and process vendor invoices; confer with vendors by phone, in writing and in person to resolve accounting discrepancies; provide technical assistance to vendors to ensure compliance with agency laws, rules and regulations.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the research and preparation of fiscal reports and respond to fiscal related inquiries.
  • Prepare various budget and fiscal reports.
  • Perform data analysis and/or audits as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and manual filing system for all related invoices and correspondence; maintain accurate ledgers for all assigned bills; access related computer systems related to contractors, vendors and billing issues.
  • Perform other job-related functions as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in transportation and/or state government.
  • Previous accounting or auditing experience preferred but not required.
