Job Description

Job Summary 

The Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT I) provides basic emergency medical care and transportation in accordance with applicable state laws, departmental policies, and established clinical protocols. Working under the direction of a Paramedic or clinical leader, the EMT I supports patient care within the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department and ensures the safe, efficient delivery of pre-hospital care. The EMT I is responsible for maintaining equipment, documenting patient information, and promoting safety and communication within the EMS team. 

Essential Functions

  • Provides basic emergency medical care in accordance with applicable state scope of practice and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assists with patient assessment, vital sign monitoring, and delivery of care under the supervision of a Paramedic or clinical leader.
  • Administers first aid treatments, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bandaging wounds, controlling bleeding, immobilizing fractures, and assisting with breathing as assigned.
  • Operates emergency vehicles safely and in compliance with hospital policy and local traffic laws.
  • Conducts vehicle and equipment checks at the start of each shift to ensure readiness and compliance with standards.
  • Maintains and restocks supplies and equipment necessary for patient care.
  • Demonstrates proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and follows infection control procedures.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) in accordance with regulatory guidelines and organizational policy.
  • Escalates patient care or operational concerns through the proper chain of command.
  • Collaborates with paramedics, nurses, and physicians to provide continuity of care upon patient transfer to a medical facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Technical School completion of a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program required
  • Technical School EMT Advanced course preferred
  • Experience working in a hospital-based emergency department, ambulance service, or critical care transport unit preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of EMS protocols, emergency response procedures, and basic life support techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate emergency vehicles and perform routine vehicle and equipment checks.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and clinical teams.
  • Familiarity with documentation standards in electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
  • Commitment to patient safety, infection control, and use of PPE.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and respond quickly to changing clinical situations.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Drivers License - MDOT Medical Physical in state of employment required
  • EMT - Emergency Medical Tech Certification from the applicable state EMS authority required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
