Position Title: Day Custodian
Department: Facilities
Reports to: Custodial Supervisor
Pay Class: Full-time Regular
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Position Summary
Day Custodians are responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment in all guest-facing areas during operating hours. This role focuses on high-traffic spaces, restrooms, and immediate response to guest needs to ensure an exceptional visitor experience. They are critical to the Science Center; they are the front line of our guest experience, serving as ambassadors while cleaning and creating a welcoming environment in our facilities and grounds. This shift is 630am-230pm.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Maintain cleanliness in all guest-facing areas during operating hours, including lobbies, restrooms, and high-traffic spaces.
• Respond promptly to guest cleaning requests and spills to ensure safety and comfort.
• Empty trash and recycling receptacles and replace liners throughout public areas.
• Restock restroom supplies and sanitize fixtures regularly.
• Perform routine floor care such as sweeping, mopping, and spot cleaning.
• Clean glass, stainless steel, and other surfaces in public view.
• Assist with event setup and breakdown during daytime operations.
• Report on maintenance issues promptly to Facilities team.
• Maintain cleaning supplies and equipment in operable condition.
• Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment.
• Strong customer service and communication skills for interacting with guests and staff.
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, proper dilution, and safe handling procedures.
• Familiarity with basic custodial tools and equipment (mops, vacuums, restroom cleaning kits).
• Ability to follow daily checklists and respond promptly to urgent cleaning needs.
• Flexibility to work weekends and holidays as part of a regular schedule.
• Basic computing skills for logging maintenance issues and completing task checklists.
Qualifications

• Ability to work weekends and holidays as part of a regular schedule.
• Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safety protocols.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
Preferred:
• Experience in a museum, hospitality, or similar public setting.
• Familiarity with basic custodial equipment (upright vacuums, mops, restroom cleaning kits).
• Strong customer service background.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching throughout shift.
• Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly.
• Repetitive motions such as sweeping, mopping, and wiping surfaces.
• Ability to talk, hear, and visually inspect work for accuracy and thoroughness.
• Medium work – exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 30 lbs. frequently.
• Primarily indoors in guest-facing areas; occasional exposure to outdoor conditions.
• Subject to noise from crowds and cleaning equipment.
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals and wet surfaces.
• Must wear PPE as required for safety.

Pay is based on several factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.
