Many patients, including children, teens, and adults, find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn intimidating. As a Phlebotomist, you will use your skills to put patients at ease while collecting blood specimens, processing samples, and performing reference laboratory procedures. This role requires expertise in blood collection across all age groups and includes related techniques such as glucose tolerance tests and blood cultures. A caregiver in this role works days from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with weekend requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Collect blood, process specimens and perform reference laboratory processing in laboratory testing.  

  • Perform related techniques, such as blood glucose tests and blood cultures.  

  • Prepare samples for testing and manage specimens in the laboratory information system. 

  • Prepare and ship reference laboratory specimens and resolve pending specimens and pending transports.  

  • Monitor test ordering patients and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED  

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

  • Blood collection experience from patients of all age groups 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of college or equivalent 

  • Six months of experience in Phlebotomy and laboratory processing 

  • One year of Blood collection experience

  • Lab experience

Physical Requirements:

  • This position is primarily mobile in nature.

  • The average amount of lifting is 10 pounds with occasional carrying of objects up to 20 pounds.

  • Sitting for short periods of time, the ability to file, move records, laboratory supplies, perform venipuncture, and move charts also requires bending and stooping.

  • Communication by means of the spoken, written and typed word is required.

  • Work requires finger dexterity and eye hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.

  • Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.

  • Special Demands: Use of personal protective equipment is required as there is a potential for exposure to biohazardous or infectious agents when drawing and processing specimens.

  • Confidentiality: The employee has access to the entire medical record for the purpose of charting and correcting laboratory results AND review of physician orders.

  • The access is limited to the amount reasonably necessary to achieve the purpose of the laboratory testing request.

  • The disclosure or requests that occur on a routine or recurring basis include patient demographics, condition and laboratory results.

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
