Job Description

The Kendall Laboratory within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating host-microbe-pathogen interactions.

Under the supervision of Dr. Kendall, the incumbent will participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, microscopy and small animals (mice) techniques. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, general microbiology, molecular biology and biochemical techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation, RNA purification and western-blot), cell culture using immortalized and primary cell lines, and small animal (mice) handling.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
  • Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required; 3 years preferred.
  • Proficiency in anaerobic microbiology and culturing techniques

Anticipated Hiring Salary: Up to $28.85/hour ($60,000 annually); commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other benchwork and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.  

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
