Job Description

SUMMARY: Provides emergency medical services to all medical and trauma patients within the Macy community and surrounding areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Must be knowledgeable in assessments, treatments and procedures pertaining to EMS in accordance with State regulations and protocols.
  • Must be able to report patient conditions to receiving hospitals via radio and observe proper radio etiquette.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital matters.
  • Use proper channels of communication/chain of command.
  • Maintain good time and attendance records and participate in staff meetings and projects.
  • Have a positive attitude toward position and co-workers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Duties demand contact with patients, medical staff at the receiving facilities, members of the Tribe, general public, IHS facilities, providers and officials of county, state and federal agencies.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education programs and maintains certifications.
  • Duties require good decision making and problem solving skills based on data collected from patient assessment.
  • Needs to have flexible working schedules and is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Must learn the main geographical area of operations and surrounding areas including all housing projects, rural homes, receiving hospitals, businesses, etc.
  • Additional duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

CERTIFICATES, LICENCES and/or REGISTRATION:

  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug test, and background check
  • Possess a valid Driver's License, must be insurable under tribal insurance.
  • Must possess current State of Nebraska EMT License.
  • Must be CPR certified (American Heart Association).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Incumbent sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during work hours.
  • Works beyond normal working hours on weekends and holidays and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
  • Must be able to see, hear and life heavy patients and equipment (minimum of 50 lbs.) to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Is subject to personal injury, exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis viruses, etc.
  • Is subject to harsh weather conditions and extreme changes from hot to cold and vice versa.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and/or ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of assessments, treatments, and procedures pertaining to EMS in accordance with State regulations and protocols.
  • Proficient in radio communication and able to report patient conditions to receiving hospitals while observing proper radio etiquette.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital matters.
  • Effective utilization of proper channels of communication and adherence to the chain of command.
  • Strong time management and attendance record maintenance.
  • Active participation in staff meetings and projects.
  • Positive attitude towards position and co-workers.
  • Adaptability to perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with patients, medical staff at receiving facilities, members of the Tribe, general public, IHS facilities, providers, and officials of county, state, and federal agencies.
  • Commitment to attending and participating in continuing education programs to maintain certifications.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills based on data collected from patient assessments.
  • Familiarity with the main geographical area of operations and surrounding areas, including housing projects, rural homes, receiving hospitals, businesses, etc.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with patients, family members, personnel, the general public, etc.
  • Must be able to relate information effectively concerning a patient's condition.
  • Must be able to work as a team member and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with all patient's family members, general public, etc.
  • Is involved with patient personnel, visitors, government agencies, etc. under all conditions and circumstances.
