Position Overview

The vehicle dismantler is responsible for the safe and efficient dismantling of vehicles and the removal of usable parts and components for resale or recycling. This plays a crucial role in the organization's mission because it provides customers with high-quality parts that are affordable and environmentally sustainable.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  1. Dismantle
  • Prepare vehicles for dismantling; remove all fluids, disconnect battery, airbags, and any other electrical components.
  • Dismantle vehicles; using various hand and power tools to remove usable parts and components, such as engines, transmissions, wheels, tires & interior parts.
  • Reduce waste by identifying usable and non-usable parts.
  • Sort and process parts; recycle or dispose of damaged or worn-out parts in the appropriate manner.
  • Maintain inventory and records.
  • Meet or exceed monthly dismantle quotas as set by Site Manager.
  • Operate heavy equipment, forklifts, and loaders to move and transport vehicles and/or heavy parts.

2. Quality Control

  • Inspect parts for quality and defects; ensure only high-quality parts are retained for sale.

3. Safety

  • Utilize expertise in operating heavy equipment to move vehicles and heavy parts safely. 
  • Adhere to safety regulations, environmental regulations, and company policies while performing duties.
  • Ensuring all equipment is properly inspected and following proper lifting and handling techniques to prevent injuries.
  • Wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Reports any issues to their supervisor.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • 1 year of automotive mechanic experience preferred.
  • Forklift Certificate preferred.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to properly use hand and power tools to disassemble vehicles and remove parts.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Must be able to work effectively alone or with others in a team environment. 
  • Must be able to work collaboratively across functions. Share expertise with others.
  • Must be a self-starter with the demonstrated ability to meet timelines and schedules related to essential functions described above. 
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. 

  • Must be able to remain in and operate equipment in a shop or dismantle area. 
  • Work in an area equipped with drain tables, forklifts, chain hoists, and other tools as needed.
  • Occasionally move about a salvage yard.
  • Ability to use both hands regularly with enough dexterity to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry objects and materials up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Expected work hours are based on role and location
  • Ability to work occasional overtime as needed as determined by the employee’s supervisor.
