Job Description

The Phlebotomist 1 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs all pre-analytical functions. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Develops a complete understanding of specimen collection and handling in order to preserve specimen validity and integrity. Relies on establish guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision. Must have excellent customer service skills.

    1. Specimens are received and accepted into the Lab Information System using proper patient identification at all times.
    2. Laboratory centrifuge for specimen processing is operated in accordance to specified guidelines at all times.
    3. Clinical specimen and order processing functions are performed within specified guidelines at all times.
    4. Procedures for the aseptic collection of samples for blood culture are followed with less than 3% contamination rate.
    5. Phlebotomy areas are maintained in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times.
    6. Positive patient identification and specimen labeling is followed at all times with less than 2 incidents a year.
    7. All specimen collection devices and techniques are properly utilized at all times as evidenced by less than 2 incidents per year.
