Job Description

GROUNDS/CUSTODIAL TEAM MEMBER (FULL TIME) DEPARTMENT Grounds/Custodial CLASSIFICATION Non-Exempt REPORTS TO Grounds Manager, Grounds Assistant Manager, Grounds Supervisor DIRECT REPORTS N/A STARTING PAY $16.50/Hour     POSITION DESCRIPTION:   The Grounds/Custodial Team Member is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment for Zoo & Aquarium visitors. Duties will include, but are not limited to, working independently while sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, cleaning surfaces with disinfectant, and emptying trash and recycling cans. Additionally, Grounds/Custodial Team Members will attend to eating areas and playground equipment.     POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Duties Percentage Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Litter control in all areas of the Zoo & Aquarium including but not limited to parking lots, walking paths, grassy areas, buildings, and event spaces. 
  • Maintaining cleanliness of all facilities, including but not limited to restrooms, administrative areas, buildings, and event spaces.
  • Frequently emptying trash receptacles and recycling.
  • Organizing and cleaning outside eating areas.
  • Regularly working with bodily fluids.
  • Setting up, cleaning, monitoring, and tearing down special events.
  • Greeting and welcoming all guests.
  • Assisting with all guests’ needs, including questions, inquiries, and directions.
  • Safely operating equipment such as trash compactors, floor scrubbers, pressure washers, orbital buffers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, and extractors.
95% Performs snow removal, as necessary. 5%   *This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium. Duty percentages are an approximation and may vary based on department needs.    *All employees must be able to perform the essential functions of this position satisfactorily and, upon request, reasonable accommodations will be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of their job, absent undue hardship.        MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
    1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. EXPERIENCE:
    1. Ability to interact with all types of people professionally and effectively.
  3. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Valid driver’s license desired.
    2. Must be able to make immediate decisions pertaining to safety.
    3. Can move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Assistance depending upon task or role.   
    4. Must be able to constantly move and position oneself to complete work for extended periods of time.
    5. Comfortable with possible exposure to bodily fluids, including blood, vomit, urine, etc.
    6. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
    7. Must pass a background and drug screening.
