Job Description

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a patient centered Laboratory Technician II 90-100%25 (36-40 hours per week) to work in our Sioux City Clinic. This position will have a supportive laboratory focus, providing phlebotomy support as well as point of care testing.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, the Laboratory Technician II performs phlebotomy and a variety of difficult venipuncture procedures, difficult technical procedures, and other associated responsibilities in the clinical laboratory, while maintaining laboratory area and equipment.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Performs phlebotomy.

  2. Performs routine laboratory testing (urinalysis, blood tests, etc.) on clinical biological specimens such as blood and body fluids. Uses the Laboratory Information System to accession specimens. Performs, or may direct performance of, data entry, labeling and processing of laboratory specimens.

  3. Prepares specimens for transport to maintain specimen viability.

  4. Records results of laboratory testing and reports results in the Laboratory Information System and to clinicians in compliance with regulatory requirements and standard operating procedures.  

  5. Operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment and instruments.

  6. Performs records and reviews daily quality control as required for assigned testing/instrumentation.

  7. Cleans and maintains a medium-sized laboratory area and equipment therein, makes inventory reports and performs simple maintenance on laboratory equipment.

  8. Maintains supplies and equipment in medium sized laboratory area and orders additional supplies.

  9. Distributes incoming freight, laboratory supplies, environmental samples or biological specimens, and packs outgoing sample or specimen containers.

  10.  Seeks assistance from the Laboratory Technical Consultant when complex equipment or technical issues arise.  Informs the Laboratory Technical Consultant of significant laboratory variances.

  11. Responds to, or may direct response to, telephone inquiries regarding laboratory specimens. Investigates and resolves laboratory questions with minimum guidance.

  12. Other duties as assigned.

Percent of Time: 90-100%25 (36-40 hours per week)

Schedule: Variable hours 7:00am - 5:30pm Monday through Friday; no weekends, no on call, no holidays

Location:  Sioux City, IA 

Pay Grade: 8 https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/pay-plans/merit-pay-plan 

Salary: Minimum salary at 100%25 time $39087.36 / hourly rate $18.72 (based on years of experience) 



Education Required

  • Two years of related laboratory experience including one year as a Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level experience, OR

  • Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification, OR

  • Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years.

Special Qualification:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Strong phlebotomy skills
  • Previous experience with lab audits
  • Previous experience handling and processing lab specimens
  • Previous EPIC and Beaker experience
  • Previous ambulatory experience
  • Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable.
