JOB SUMMARY:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Registered Nurse, participates as a member of the OSS Health Ambulatory Surgery Center team in planning, preparing, and implementing safe and effective patient care while enhancing the OSS Health Ambulatory Surgery Center experience for patients undergoing surgery.

SCHEDULE:

4 - 10hr shifts weekly, 6:00am - 5:00pm.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates expertise in the execution the duties and responsibilities of a Medical Assistant.
  • Assists in the delivery of patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the Preoperative and post anesthesia to include but is not limited to: transporting of patients, obtaining vital signs, preparation of IV bags, answering phones, collecting pre-admission testing, medical record preparation and assembly, use of Medent and CPSI, cleaning of patient bays, beds and equipment, stocking of supplies, handling of linen, trash and biohazard waste.
  • Assists in the delivery of patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the Operative Suites and Sterile Stores areas.
  • Assists anesthesia team with daily tasks such as turnover of cases, restocking of supplies, preparing block kits, assisting with positioning patient and having medications/ultrasound ready for nerve block.  Helps to perform daily safety checks on anesthesia machines and provides support for basic airway management (assisting with supplies, holding oxygen mask, etc.). 
  • Prepares and checks assigned cases for appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for procedures.
  • Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies, setting up cases, scrubbing, gowning, and draping as observed.  Reports any break in aseptic technique.
  • Maintains an orderly back table and mayo stand during procedure following established routine set-up as observed for competency.
  • Assists circulating nurse in performing sponge, needle, and instrument counts; immediately reports discrepancies and/or corrections as documented and observed.
  • Consistently demonstrates proper handling of instruments and equipment to avoid damage and loss as observed.
  • Participates in decontamination and sterilization processes as defined by policy.
  • Facilitates efficient room turnover.
  • Participates in preference cards updates as documented and observed.
  • Demonstrates an ability to perform scrub duties as outlined in procedure manual, as observed for competency.
  • Assists with application of dressings and transfers patient.
  • Assists with general cleaning of room and sets up next case as observed.
  • Assists in the delivery of patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse in the Pain Management areas.
  • Facilitates operation of fluoroscopy equipment under the direction of the physician.
  • Assists with opening of supplies, patient care positioning, and other duties as assigned in the pain procedure rooms.
  • Demonstrates a good rapport and cooperative relationship with all members of the team exemplifying service excellence.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt to changes in the workload and work as part of the team to finish the schedule as observed.
  • Assists other staff members with completion of routine duties of the department as observed.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of supplies and resources.
  • Assists in front office activities as assigned.
  • Assists with the orientation of new personnel as assigned.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient, Center, and physician information; respects the patient’s privacy.
  • Manages conflict and frustration in a positive and constructive manner as observed.
  • Performs duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient safety and proper body mechanics when moving patients or equipment.
  • Checks assigned equipment before patient use to ensure proper functioning; immediately reports any inoperative or malfunctioning equipment
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of departmental safety policies and procedures; participates in identification and evaluation of potential department safety problems and precautions as observed and documented.
  • Adheres to department specific OSHA and infection control guidelines regarding health maintenance and infection prevention 100% of the time as observed and documented.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant strongly preferred.
  • Must possess strong computer skills and have the ability to learn new computer software on the job.
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology required.
  • Current certification in basic life support (BLS) required, or the ability to obtain before working independently with patients.
