Job Description

Position Summary
The Vision Therapy Assistant supports the optometrist and vision therapist in delivering individualized therapy sessions. This role involves working directly with patients to implement prescribed exercises, documenting progress, and maintaining a supportive, motivating environment. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, great with people of all ages, and eager to learn specialized skills in the field of vision therapy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct vision therapy sessions under the supervision of the optometrist or lead therapist.
  • Guide patients through therapeutic activities to improve visual skills such as eye teaming, focusing, tracking, and visual processing.
  • Accurately record patient progress and session notes in the practice’s electronic health record system.
  • Assist in preparing therapy materials, setting up equipment, and maintaining a clean, organized therapy space.
  • Provide encouragement and clear instructions to help patients stay engaged and motivated.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on at-home therapy exercises when directed.
  • Support front office tasks as needed, such as scheduling and patient check-in.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • HS Diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Healthcare/medical assistant experience preferred
  • Optical/Eyecare experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with medical records management and medical terminology is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of vital signs assessment and physiology knowledge is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills to build rapport with patients and to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and a commitment to providing excellent patient care.

SENSORY, MOTOR REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Extensive use of computers.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly.
  • Free to move about offices, practice locations.
  • Able to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
