Qualifications
The Coding Specialist role requires a minimum of one year of coding instruction or previous hospital coding experience, along with a high school diploma or GED. Candidates must possess an AAPC Certified Professional Coder certification and strong outpatient coding knowledge, including proficiency in ICD-10-CM and CPT codes, as well as modifiers. Excellent customer relations and the ability to maintain department productivity and accuracy standards are also essential.
Job Description
Maintains a professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in accordance with our Service Excellence Standards and Core Values.
Maintains credentials with AHIMA or AAPC is required.
Keeps abreast of all new coding developments by attending any coding classes, reading articles on coding updates, and attending seminars when available.
Possess outpatient coding knowledge and experience necessary to accurately assign ICD-10-CM codes for principal diagnosis and all applicable secondary diagnoses, including diagnosis needed to meet medical necessity for tests performed on all Emergency Department and/or Treatment Series encounters, as assigned.
Possess outpatient coding knowledge and experience necessary to accurately assign CPT procedure codes for principal procedure and any applicable secondary procedures on all Emergency Department encounters. Accurately assign CPT procedure codes for injection/infusion services on Observation and/or Treatment Series accounts.
Understands and appropriately assigns all applicable modifiers to CPT procedure codes and ancillary charges required to prevent billing edits.
Maintains department specific productivity standards with a 95% accuracy rate.
Queries physicians appropriately when documentation is not clear in the medical record.
Respects patient confidentiality at all times.
Performs other backup duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly
Qualifications:
At least one year coding instruction in qualified program or previous coding experience in Hospital setting preferred.
