Job Summary:
Under personal supervision, prepares and hands appropriate equipment and supplies to anesthesia providers during induction, maintenance and emergence of anesthesia; provides supplies and monitors equipment to start and place invasive lines; following training and when deemed competent and under direct supervision, prepares all appropriate supplies and equipment for surgical, diagnostic and obstetrical cases; maintains and services electronic and mechanical equipment; troubleshoots problems with anesthesia equipment and supplies; assists in tracking and maintaining capital equipment.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Delivers of services to anesthesia providers; prepares and hands appropriate equipment and supplies to Anesthesia providers during induction, maintenance and emergence of anesthesia.
- When deemed competent, prepares all appropriate supplies and equipment for surgical, diagnostic and obstetrical cases; connects appropriate gas hoses, mass spectrometry and suction components; assembles and prepares necessary airway and intubating equipment; assembles and prepares (sterile) intravenous solutions and other invasive lines (e.g., arterial, central venous pressure and Swan-Ganz lines); possesses working knowledge of sterile technique; performs sterile skin prep and drape for physician.
- Prepares procedure trays for arterial line, CVP, Swan-Ganz and routine intravenous lines; prepares and hands equipment and supplies; assembles and prepares transducers; assembles and prepares equipment for cardiac output.
- Positions patient during anesthetic administration, provides supplies and monitors equipment to start and place invasive lines; assists during induction/intubation by applying tracheal pressure; places monitoring equipment on patients.
- Performs glucose monitoring.
- Evaluates, troubleshoots and performs emergency repairs on anesthesia equipment during surgery; maintains and services electronic and mechanical equipment used by Anesthesia department in accordance with departmental standards including unit testing, calibrating, cleaning, refurbishing, disassembly, and reassembly to ensure immediate availability.
- Checks, calibrates, zero balances, and assures proper function of appropriate equipment (e.g., oxygen analyzers, pulse oximeters and mass spectrometer, Arterial/Pulmonary artery monitors, EKG, temperature, blood pressure and transcutaneous monitors, pressure infuser pumps, blood and fluid warmers).
- Organizes equipment and supplies in departmental workroom.
- Replenishes supplies in anesthesia machine/chart in each anesthetizing location after conclusion of procedures; restocks and inspects work/supply room; restocks supplies and pharmaceuticals as appropriate.
- Assists in tracking and maintaining capital equipment; assists in providing input to and following-up with purchasing, repairing and replacing capital equipment.
- In conjunction with department administrative staff, identifies all equipment within department with appropriate label; assists in tracking patient charges; files anesthesia records; inventories supplies; works with central supply department to assist in re-evaluating stock levels of supplies and equipment; works with vendors.
- Assists supervisors with quality improvement data collection. Tracks missing equipment.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
- Minimum six (6) months experience in operating room, anesthesia or acute healthcare setting.
Education
License, Certification, Registration Additional Requirements:
- Ability to follow instructions and to troubleshoot equipment problems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, interpersonal relations, and customer service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of anesthesia equipment, methods of sterilization and universal precautions, basic anatomy, physiology, and universal precautions, computers, supply ordering, and inventory.
- Associates degree in Health Science, or related field.
