We are seeking a Medical Assistant to handle front and back office procedures, assist with patient care, and manage administrative tasks. Candidates must have completed a Medical Assistant program or equivalent military training, with certification (CMA or RMA) or the ability to obtain it within 90 days of employment, along with BLS certification.
Job Description
Responsible for front and back office procedures supporting the Maternal Fetal Medicine division located at the Department of Ob/Gyn Princess Anne office. Also assists Physicians and Nurses with medical examination of patients.
Answers incoming telephone calls. Triage and refers calls as necessary. Also responsible for taking messages, paging doctors when appropriate, handling hospital consults, and answering inquiries.
Schedules appointments with doctors, calls patients to remind and confirm appointments; reschedules patients from the bump list, and schedules residents’ clinics where appropriate.
Prepares charts for the next day; creates new patient charts, files and pulls charts and checks charts for referrals and authorization prior to visit. Also prepares charge tickets.
Greets patients in a courteous manner, marks off names as patients arrive, and notifies nurses/medical assistants/MDs of arrivals.
Registers old and new patients, verifies demographics and insurance, determines insurance copays, and collects money and copays to send to EVMS Medical Group.
Checks-in and checks-out patients, obtains and writes referrals, when appropriately trained and directed, and schedules outside appointments with specialists.
Gives directions to patients and visitors.
Prints daily/weekly schedules and distributes.
Provides back-up coverage as needed.
Schedules conference rooms.
Handles pick-up and drop off of medications.
Takes vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure. May draw blood and give injections under the immediate supervision of a Physician or RN.
Chaperons when appropriate and assists during certain minor surgeries and diagnostic procedures, such as Pap Smears.
Maintains clean, well-equipped examination rooms; cleans and sterilizes instruments.
Stocks examination rooms and triage area with medical supplies. Inventories and reorders supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned, according to the individual departmental needs.
PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES.
Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program. Equivalent military training will be accepted. Must have certification (CMA or RMA) or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment. Completion of BLS class and re-certify every 2 years.
Previous medical office experience with relevant functions in a doctor’s office preferred. Must have some working knowledge of computers. Customer service-oriented individual is required.
