Job Summary

The BCIT Geographic Information Systems (GIS) internship will provide opportunities to learn how the City of Baltimore utilizes spatial technology to support critical operations. The intern will work alongside experienced GIS professionals to perform a range of tasks, including spatial data management, map production, map application development, and coordinating with government stakeholders to support requests and projects. The internship will allow the intern to gain experience working in an increasingly challenging and fast paced atmosphere, as well as learn new skills through several training opportunities.

Essential Functions:

  • Mapping application development

  • GIS data management

  • Cartography/map production

  • Open Baltimore open data platform management

  • Project and workflow technical documentation

  • Training

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ESRI software experience (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123)

  • Microsoft Office experience

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently attend a Maryland high school as a junior/senior​​

  • Currently attend a Maryland higher education institution​​

  • Graduated from a Maryland high school, but currently attend a ​non-Maryland higher education institution​​

  • Graduated from a Maryland high school, and is currently enrolled or graduated from a career technical training program

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Coursework in information technology, computer science, or business analytics

  • Proficient with ESRI software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123)

  • Organization skills 

  • Critical thinker

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 

  • Project Management skills

  • Ability to present recommendations clearly and concisely

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

Additional Information 

Background Check                                        

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
