Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with patients and staff.

Job Description

Summary

This position works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The PCT performs and assists with individual activities of daily living as well as certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse according to established policies, procedures and guidelines. Performs general secretarial and clerical duties as needed.


Responsibilities

A Day in the Life of a Behavioral Health Tech at MyMichigan Health:

(50%)* Under the direction of the nurse, prioritizes and organizes care of assigned patients, performing basic nurse’s aide skills as outlined in orientation, competencies, policy and procedures.

(25%)* Documents on patient’s chart, any treatments and pertinent observations. Provides report to team on tasks completed.

(25%)* Maintains a clean, safe and orderly unit. Monitors and manages the milieu in order to maintain safety under the direction of the RN. Completes 15 minute checks and provides 1:1 care as assigned. Performs general receptionist and clerical duties for the unit/department, including; answering phone calls, referring calls, answering intercom, taking messages, filing, directing visitors, and other related duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports the mission, goals, policies and standards of nursing. Hospital and unit policies and work rules are recognized, supported and implemented. Works is in compliance with regulatory, Joint Commission and Michigan Mental Health code.

Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures Emergency care/safety: Performs according to procedure in all hospital emergency situations. Provides and ensures safe and secure environment for the patient, staff and visitors. Provides excellent customer service: Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times.

Participates with staff meetings, performance improvement, educational offerings, and other unit activities as assigned.

Adheres to Infection Prevention and Control Practices including but not limited to the use of hand hygiene and appropriate use of protective equipment.

Takes initiative to provide appropriate activities for patients when needed.

Ensures equipment is clean, in good repair, and ready for use (Wheelchairs, fall sensors, commodes, etc.)

Has a basic understanding of psychiatric disorders and basic therapeutic rapport skills in order to to perform de-escalation of the anxious or agitated individual.

Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

BLS - Basic Life Support

PCT - MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification

Required Equivalent Experience - Must hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the state of Michigan or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan or successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program, or a Medical Assistant with the following: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), OR equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant CCMA, etc.. *For current PCT’s with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered*

Comments: Knowledge of reading, writing, mathematical, and computer skills as normally acquired through completion of high school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience working in long term care, acute inpatient services, or inpatient mental health is preferred.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Mandatory Recipient Rights training within 30 days of hire and annually. Completion of Epic Unit Clerk 100 training.
