Role Highlights: Instrument Man / Chainman / Rodman to support construction layout, as-built surveys, grading, and utility infrastructure projects, with a focus on transmission lines, substations, and supporting civil work. This is a hands-on field-position ideal for someone who takes pride in accuracy, consistency, and teamwork, and wants to grow within the surveying and construction industry.
This role works closely with the Survey Party Chief and plays a critical role in ensuring layout accuracy, quality data collection, and safe, efficient field operations.

100% travel - Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina

Shaping Impact: Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Support field surveying: set/mark/verify stakes, hubs, lath, offsets, grades and control points; measure distance, elevations, and offsets.
  • Perform as-built data collection for civil, utility and structural features; document cut/fill and earthwork.
  • Operate and maintain survey instruments (total stations, GNSS, data collectors, robotic) under Party Chief direction
  • Assist construction layout for foundations, piers, utilities, access roads, curb & gutter, paving, and site improvements
  • Support transmission/substation and power infrastructure layout (foundations, drilled piers, anchor bolts, steel, underground utilities, duct banks, drainage).
  • Conduct grading checks, slope verification, centerlines, grades, and cross-slope confirmation
  • Prepare and verify field notes, sketches, measurements, daily documentation, and stake logs; report discrepancies to Party Chief
  • Follow jobsite and utility-specific safety protocols; work safely around heavy equipment
  • Handle equipment setup, breakdown, basic inspections, and report damage; assist with mobilization/demobilization.
  • Maintain organized vehicles, tools, project records and clean jobsite areas
Your Unique Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in survey field work, construction layout, or civil construction preferred (entry-level candidates considered)
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather and terrain conditions
  • Willingness to travel and work out of town as project needs require
  • Ability to lift and carry survey equipment and materials
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a crew
  • Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working as an Instrument Man, Chainman, or Rodman
  • Familiarity with construction layout, grading, utilities, and civil plans
  • Exposure to Trimble survey equipment or GNSS systems
  • Experience on transmission, substation, or heavy civil projects
  • Interest in advancing toward Survey Party Chief or LSIT
Physical Skills and Essential Requirements: 
  • Ability to lift and carry lightweight equipment and materials, typically up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone.
