The Line Apprentice position supports the operations process in providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers by learning a working knowledge of computer system, tools, equipment, and material. Employees in the Line Apprentice position will learn the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system. In addition to normal work hours, employees in the Line Apprentice position must be available to be on-call with a more experienced person, as required, and to work all hours, as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, during planned outages or emergency situations. Employees in the Line Apprentice position must learn to perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all company safety rules and procedures.
Staring Pay: $26.56 per hour
The Line Apprentice positions will be located throughout Duke Energy's Florida region. The exact location will be determined based on business needs at the time of offer. Locations are subject to change. Relocation will be entirely at your own expense. In the next section, you will be able to select your preferred location and your second preferred location. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
Construct, maintain, and repair electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines
Install and repair electrical equipment such as street lighting and load control devices
Construct overhead and underground distribution lines based on engineering specifications, including setting poles, pulling cable, setting transformers, etc.
Install equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, load control devices, meters, street lights, safe lights, etc.
Maintain and repair equipment such as checking and doing preventative maintenance; Also, involves using test equipment such as volt and amp meters to measure the performance of equipment
Respond to trouble calls when equipment fails and/or electrical service is interrupted
Shift Work, Overtime, Weekend Work.
Frequent travel
Work environment ranges from indoors to outside in varying degrees of heat and cold weather conditions
Emergency situations may require working at night and in inclement weather
Subject to confined spaces, (manholes, vaults, etc.)
Subject to periodic call-out duty and subject to second and third shift schedules
Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED
Valid driver's license
Military experience
Certificate from Lineman's Training School or currently attending in a Lineman Training Program
Experience in utility, electrical, telephone, cable tv, plumbing, tree trimming, building/construction, or cell towers
Experience with law enforcement, fire department, farming, or fence building
Experience with responding to natural disasters or emergency situations (storm response such as hurricanes, tornado, wind event, high water; emergency responses such as fires, auto accidents, etc.)
Job Specific Requirements:
Ability to successfully complete the Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers (VAL). Please Read: Upon successfully submitting your application for this position, you will be invited to take the online test, the Modern Hire Virtual Assessment for Lineworker. Please ensure that you read all instructions carefully prior to beginning the online test. You will have 72 hours to complete your assessment (online test) immediately following submission of your application.
Ability to successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
Ability to obtain DOT Certification
Respirator Clearance
Ability to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the state for which you are hire within one year of hire.
Successful background check and drug screen
Work schedule requires working various shifts as business needs arise
Position has on-call responsibilities as scheduled and generally available at others times as needed, demonstrate the ability to work independently, and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, and in all weather conditions to perform work required during planned and emergency outages
Requires ability to travel and stay overnight to various locations and work extended hours to assist in major storm restoration
Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours; may be on ground, in a bucket on a line truck, or at the top of a distribution pole
Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault
Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
Ability to lift, push and pull up to 75 pounds
Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision)
Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
This position has a residency requirement of residing 40 minutes from your residence to your base work location. Relocation will be entirely at your own expense.
