Job Description

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C., and Chicago. The AHA offers a flexible hybrid work schedule of three days in the office and two days working remotely.

We are currently seeking Medical Coding Intern for our Chicago office. This is an onsite, part-time position for the summer, May-Aug 2026, scheduled to work 10 – 20 hours per week.This 12 week internship is designed for individuals interested in building foundational skills in medical coding (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II) and developing the ability to communicate coding guidance clearly and professionally. Interns gain hands‑on experience researching coding regulations, drafting coding advice, and supporting documentation improvement initiatives.

Essential Functions

  • Learn the fundamentals of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
  • Research and interpret coding guidelines from CMS, AMA, and Coding Clinic.
  • Draft clear, actionable medical coding advice and documentation clarifications.
  • Support real‑world content development (cheat sheets, reference guides, newsletter content).
  • Participate in peer reviews and receive mentoring from experienced coding professionals.
  • Build a writing experience focused on coding‑related communication.


Minimum Qualifications: Education

  • Associate's Degree Studying or pursuing associate's degree in health information management (HIM), health care administration, communications, technical writing or related field Required or
  • Bachelor's Degree Studying or pursuing bachelor's degree in health information management (HIM), health care administration, communications, technical writing or related field Required


Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong writing and research skills - Required
  • Interest in medical coding, health care documentation or clinical workflows - Required
  • Interest in mentor-supported learning experience - Required

Salary Information:

Commensurate with related experience. The AHA is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.

37000

46000

Salary Range - Maximum:

55000
