Job Description

Bargaining Unit: EA

Rate of Pay: $32.20/hour + DOE

Summary
Assists the Surgical care team in many aspects of patient care including but not limited to patient care under the direction of an RN or MD, care of the environment, transportation of patients, supplies, equipment and specimens to staff within and outside the Surgical Services Unit. Performs endoscopy technician duties as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with Operating Room set-up and turn-over.
  • Puts away supplies and equipment (after a case or as orders are received).
  • Sets up and prepares the YAG Laser machine for Eye Laser Procedures.
  • Assists physician with YAG Laser and Peripheral Iridotomy procedures.
  • Sets up the room for endoscopy cases, assists with the technical portion of endoscopies, and with clean up.
  • Assists physician with endoscopy procedures under the direction of physician and RN.
  • Understands and uses universal precautions, manufacturer recommendations, and appropriate supplies and solutions to decontaminate instrumentation, endoscopes and equipment.
  • Transports patients, specimens and supplies; acts as runner to other departments.
  • Understands and observes department policies and protocols for specimen handling and transport.
  • Follows directions provided by RN or MD.
  • Assists the Anesthesiologist by setting up anesthesia supplies and instruments before, during and after surgical procedures.
  • Picks supplies and equipment for pending surgical cases.
  • Routinely disinfects machinery, carts and surfaces prior to end of shift.
  • Consistently follows established Infection Control guidelines.
  • Understand and implements event related sterility.
  • Assists with patient care in all areas (OR, PACU, ASD, SPR & Anesthesia). Provides technical support and basic patient care tasks.
  • Effectively communicates with Charge RN’s (OR and ASD) regarding what is required to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Participates and stays current with current unit-based competency program.
  • Participates in departmental and hospital-wide Quality Improvement Measures.
  • Follows departmental procedures in reporting unsafe or hazardous situations or items that need repair.
  • Answers phone and intercom calls, and provides information and relays messages appropriately.
  • Attends 80% of staff meetings and unit activities, unless previously excused by Manager. Proactively arranges to acquire required information from meetings unable to attend (i.e., by reading meeting minutes, requesting an in-service, additional training, etc.)
  • Utilizes department communication boards/updates to exchange information and messages.
  • Is available to work stand-by.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
No educational requirement 6 months to 1 year relevant experience

Required Licenses/Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

  • Upon hire

BLS: Employee will be enrolled in the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Entry or Prep Curriculum (depending on their previous BLS certification).

  • Within 3 months of hire into job
