Job Description
CORRECTIONAL OFFICER Full-Time Position Starts at $17.11 per hour, rate increases upon successful completion of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT) Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. This specification does not constitute an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities and may be subject to change based on operational needs. Position Overview: The purpose of this classification is to ensure the safe, legal, and humane custody and care of persons incarcerated in the Effingham County Prison. Employees in this classification may also supervise visitation. Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**): Essential functions are those duties required to be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, to meet the operational needs of the position.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintains custody, control, and supervision of inmates in accordance with established procedures; monitors inmate activity within the facility and during visitation.
- Transports or escorts inmates to work details, court, and medical facilities as required; transfers inmates to appropriate custody for outdoor work assignments.
- Conducts head counts in accordance with Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures to maintain security and accountability.
- Conducts routine security rounds; inspects locks, fences, alarms, and other security systems to maintain facility security.
- Supervises inmates during mealtimes, recreation, visitation, telephone use, and mail distribution; assists with medication distribution under established procedures; refers and responds to inmate medical requests in accordance with established protocols; monitors routine cleaning and maintenance activities within the facility.
- Escorts inmates between areas of the facility.
- Completes accurate and timely reports, logs, and documentation in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintains awareness of inmate behavior and facility conditions; reports incidents, violations, and safety concerns in accordance with established procedures.
- Performs duties in accordance with established laws, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures with limited independent discretion.
- Employees hired in a trainee capacity must obtain Georgia P.O.S.T. certification within the timeframe established by Georgia P.O.S.T. Council requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must possess and maintain, or be eligible to obtain within required timeframes, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification for corrections and applicable weapons qualification. PHYSICAL AND WORK REQUIREMENTS Work is performed in a correctional facility environment with exposure to potentially volatile or unpredictable individuals. Duties may require standing and walking for extended periods; responding to emergencies; physically restraining individuals; operating security equipment; and working varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
