Careers in Child Development/Childcare AssistantInternship Description/Learning Objectives:
Careers in Child Development/Childcare will provide an opportunity for eight students with career interest in the field of childcare services. The students will be placed in a childcare setting on the Bethlehem Centers of Nashville campus to assist childcare teachers in classrooms that provide quality childcare for young children ages 2-5 years old (Toddler through Pre-School Age students).
Learning Objectives: Effective Communication Skills, Activity Planning (Lesson Plan Development), Creativity for Young Children, Strong Teamwork and Support Staff Skills, Appreciation for Education and Literacy.
Job Duties:
The students completing this tract will complete an on-site childcare training seminar with the childcare director, be assigned to a head teacher in a designated classroom and remain with that class during the entire work experience once assignments begin. During the placement students will be responsible to assisting the childcare teacher with daily chores, preparing for activities for the younger preschoolers, assisting with arts and crafts activities, hands on learning activities, lunch prep and clean-up, prepping for naptime session, decorating classroom and other general teacher assistant tasks. The students assigned to this tract will also be responsible for developing a weekly lesson plan and implementing one activity each day with younger childcare-aged students. The daily activities can include reading to younger students, math or science projects, arts and crafts, puppet show development or other desires that the classroom teacher may request. Students enrolled in this tract will meet weekly with classroom teachers for mentoring, coaching and performance evaluation.

Standard-School attire is acceptable as well as other comfortable casual wear, closed toe shoes and covered undergarments strictly enforced.Travel Required:
The project requires no travel as the job is performed in a structured childcare setting on Bethlehem Center campus.
Physical Requirements:
No major physical requirements. Plan to support teachers working with young children.
Working Conditions: (example: Office Warehouse, Outdoors, with Children or Animals, etc.)

The full program is June 1st – July 17th
June 1st – June 3rd: Interns attend assigned worksite for scheduled times.
June 4th: POWER Youth Summit at Sheraton Music City Nashville Airport
June 5th – July 17th: Team Members on site at their agencies on Monday-Friday at the time
scheduled by employer. You will be scheduled to work 4 hours daily
which equals 20 hours per week.
July 13th – July 17th: POWER Youth Summer Employment Program - End of Summer
Celebration – Team Members can showcase their projects from the
summer.
If you are selected as an Experience Work Team Member, you will make $12.00 an hour and receive a summer program with project-based employment for youth ages 14 -15.
Experience Work projects can be focused on the arts, leadership skills or community development. In addition, you will learn “work ready” skills for future employment. There are opportunities to intern in many areas of Nashville, so please select the opportunity based on your access to transportation.
