Key requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of a CNA class (desired), current BLS Healthcare certification, and previous experience in an acute care hospital or nursing home (desired). The candidate should also have basic computer knowledge and the ability to stand, bend, and lift for extended periods.

Job Summary: Assist patients with activities of daily living, assist with or provide basic care to patients and assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides basic nursing care to patients within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice that includes actions that meet the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient. 
  • Personal Care/Activities of Daily Living are not limited to bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding and assisting with toileting or incontinent care. 
  • Taking and recording vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations and oxygen saturation levels), measuring fluid intake/output, and monitoring behavior or physical changes. 
  • Turning, repositioning, and transferring patients between beds, wheelchairs, etc.; assisting with walking. 
  • Making beds, changing linens, and keeping patient rooms clean and safe. 
  • Answering call lights, in a polite manner and communicating information to the appropriate personnel or family. 
  • Assist in admission by setting up room with appropriate supplies for patient ADL care, clean linen on bed, transfers and discharge of patients by gathering patient belongings and assisting patient and belongings out of facility to vehicle. 
  • Updating electronic health records (EHR), documenting care, and reporting changes to nurses. 
  • Provides explanation to patients and families prior to administering care. 
  • Able to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations. 
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; ensure patient confidentiality. 
  • Able to manage and operate equipment safely and correctly. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by department supervisor or administration that is within Nursing Assistant scope of practice. 
  • Complies with all organized policies regarding ethical business practices. 

Job Competencies:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care and toileting. 
  • Vital Signs Monitoring: Accurately measuring blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, and oxygen saturation levels. 
  • Mobility and Positioning: Safely transferring patients, ambulating, and repositioning bedridden patients to prevent pressure ulcers. 
  • Infection Control: Proper handwashing, PPE usage, and following sanitization protocols. 
  • Patient Safety and Monitoring: Identify changes in patient condition, reporting to nurses, and ensuring a safe environment. 
  • Documentation: Accurately recording intake/output, food consumption, vital signs and care provided. 

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Patient Care (ADLs): Assisting with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and feeding. 
  • Clinical Monitoring: Measuring and recording vital signs.
  • Mobility Assistance: Safely transferring patients, repositioning bedridden patients and assisting with range of motion exercises. 
  • Infection Control: Adhering to safety protocols, including proper handwashing, sanitation, and usage of PPE. 
  • Documentation Updating electronic health records (EHR) and tracking patient behavior and conditions. 
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, bend and lift for long periods. 
  • Communication: Interacting effectively with patients, families, and healthcare staff. 
  • Compassion and Empathy: Providing emotional support to patients and families. 
  • Attention to Detail: Monitoring changes in patient conditions. 
  • Time Management: Prioritizing tasks in fast-paced environments. 

Education/Licensure Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Completion of CNA Class desired.
  • Current BLS Healthcare certification. 

Experience Requirements:

  • Previous experience in acute care hospital or nursing home desired. 
  • Basic computer knowledge. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Strength and Lifting: Ability to lift, push, pull and transfer patients safely using proper body mechanics. 
  • Stamina and Mobility: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. 
  • Body Mechanics: Frequent bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, and reaching (above shoulder and below waist). 
  • Environmental Handling: Ability to work in confined spaces (e.g., bathrooms) and maneuver around equipment. 
  • Sensory Requirements: Ability to hear call lights, see patients with skin conditions, and communicate clearly with patients, families and staff. 
  • Environmental Exposure: Potential exposure to communicable/airborne diseases, blood-borne pathogens, body fluids and hazardous materials and waste.   
  • Occasional repetitive exposure to unpleasant and/or disagreeable working conditions; (i.e. odors, dirt, grease/oil, noise, fluctuations in temperatures). 
  • Work under stress due to workload pressures
  • Ability to function properly under pressure and stress and cope with stressful situations.
