Position Summary:

The Patient Accounts Representative will compute, bill, post, and collect patient accounts and perform other duties as required.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a liaison for the providers of health care services, patients or other responsible persons, and revenue sources to ensure the accuracy of charges. 
  • Maintains records of transactions and account resolutions. 
  • Verifies health care charges against established rates for diagnosis, treatment, services, and supplies. May maintain patient accounts using an automated billing system that uses codes to facilitate reimbursement from insurers. Establishes pro-rata responsibility to permit prompt collection of patient’s share. 
  • Verifies medical and patient data such as diagnosis, treatment, proof of eligibility, and insurance verification. Submits claims to a variety of payment sources including state and federal Medicare, and other third-party reimbursors. Prepares correspondence for collection of accounts. 
  • Maintains communication with patients and third-party carriers until accounts are paid or referred to another appropriate agency for further collection activity. 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of medical terminology used in medical billing, current office practices and procedures, and basic math.
  • Ability to elicit and evaluate information, sometimes of a highly personal and sensitive nature, from a broad spectrum of individuals and agencies. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and with extensive detail, and to prepare written correspondence using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to coordinate functions and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to use and access database computer applications. 
  • Ability to organize work and set priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn procedure and disease codes used in medical billing. 
  • Knowledge of fiscal recordkeeping using an automated system and/or healthcare billing.
  • Knowledge of methods for qualifying for funding; collection laws, regulations, and techniques.
  • Ability to convince debtors of the necessity of assuming financial responsibility, and to explain the financial impact of various alternatives.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Medical terminology knowledge is preferred.
  • One year of general office experience involving public contact in a medical office; or 
  • A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
