Job Description

Position Summary

The Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) team in MassDOT’s Office of Transportation Planning conducts analysis and creates resources around three main themes: transportation security and vulnerability, destination accessibility, and land use. The Co-Op will be responsible for supporting a wide variety of projects related to ESG’s themes. The Co-op will assist the ESG team in the creation and maintenance of datasets, maps, dashboards, and other resources. Additionally, they will conduct analysis and research on qualitative and quantitative data in various platforms, as well as write documentation to support the previously listed items.

The responsibilities in this position are extremely varied, with many different topics and types of tasks depending on experience and interest. A successful applicant needs to be able to manage multiple projects with concurrent timelines and be very detail-oriented, independent, proactive, and organized.

The selected candidate will be expected to follow a hybrid work model that consists of both in-office and work from home days.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gain familiarity with transportation datasets, planning and analysis tools, and platforms.

  • Assist with the development and implementation of new data tools and products.

  • Maintain and build upon both internal and public-facing data layers and dashboards, including the eTOD Dashboard, Service Coverage Planning Tool, and Community Transportation Explorer.

  • Conduct analytical and research work related to the above data and beyond via written reports and briefings and via web-based tools and dashboards, as requested by OTP and MassDOT stakeholders or as prioritized internally by the ESG team.

  • Manage, organize, and maintain data and analysis.

  • Develop and author methodologies that address social outcomes/impacts associated with transportation planning and implementation.

  • Collaborate with people and stakeholders in other MassDOT divisions regarding data management, governance, and inventories.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a small and collaborative team environment.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Solution-oriented attitude, with excellent time management and organizational skills; strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize projects and deadlines.

  • Ability to draft resource documentation, reports, briefings, and slide decks.

  • Comfortable undertaking and reviewing quantitative and qualitative data collected across a variety of sources, including but not limited to the U.S. Census Bureau and other public data sources, as well as survey data and focus group responses.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, especially Microsoft Excel.

  • Familiarity and experience with GIS data and tools, preferably ESRI platforms, and a working knowledge of how to conduct spatial analysis and research.

  • Ability to assemble and organize data in a way that allows for meaningful analysis and the identification of patterns. Knowledge of programming languages such as R and Python a plus.

  • Experience with data visualization and web development platforms, including but not limited to ESRI Experience Builder and PowerBI, a plus.

  • Experience in communications and/or graphic design a plus.

  • Experience and interest in transit or transportation a plus.
